There are over 80,000 Chinese characters, but most of them are seldom used today. For basic reading and writing of modern Chinese, you only need a few thousands. There are a few input methods, but the most common is using Pinyin. Pinyin, more formally Hanyu Pinyin, is the most common Standard Mandarin romanization system in use. Hanyu means the Chinese language, pin means "spell" and yin means "sound". Pinyin uses the Latin alphabet to represent sounds in Standard Mandarin. This is typed into a PC using a standard keyboard and then characters that match the pinyin spelling appear and you click on the right character. There is also another way using the parts of any given character (up to five) and it will allow for input of Chinese in to a PC using a QWERTY Keyboard.

how do western people use computer if they have thousands of characters? it's the same, we use some software to input our words and the software has its own methods to translate letters to Chinese words, it's not difficult, so dont worry about Chinese people using the cumputer. lol.
