Do you presume that they are homeschooling to shelter their children? Do you presume that their kids will recieve a substandard education? Do you automatically decide they are radical fundamentalists who are stunting their kids? Or do you have an open mind?

For those who are curious I do home school my sons ages 13 and 14. We have been homeschooling for 5 years now and love it. My sons test scores are off the charts and they are receiving a Classical education. I am curious what others feelings are though. I do agree that it is not for everyone.

Most Christian home schooled families use the same curriculum any other private Christian school would use. In the 10 plus years I home schooled, I’ve coached…volleyball, basket ball and soft ball…we had art classes, music classes and gym at the YMCA…there is obviously little knowledge regarding home schooling activities and home schooling Groups. We roller skated and went bowling…at least once a week, I even held biology classes at my home…field trips are also available. Google… home school groups.. 70,100,000…websites to check out.

Here is the other side of home schooling little hear about or bother to check into….successful people who have home schooled

http://www.sharebradenton.homestead.com/...

Home schooling isn’t for everyone…it takes time, dedication and money. I spend on average $2000.00 a year to home school my son…I don’t get a tax benefit and the school still gets my tax money. Most of us are doing what we know is in the best interest of our child.

For those of you so ignorant to make the remark that our children don’t live in the real world…where do you think they live? Where do you think they work, go to college, join the military……is there an entire society made up of millions of people who some how can’t survive or assimilate because they were home schooled? It always amazes me how those who say they are so open minded… are so closed minded when it comes to Christians who home school.

Edit: Both of my children tested off the chart as well. We use the A Beka Academy DVD program and we love it.

Edit. Did you happen to see this?

I assume that the children will not be shot at while waiting to board their bus on their way to school. I assume that their children will be brought up with the morals of the parents and not the impositions of a stranger that spends 9 months of their formative years with them. I assume that their child will probably rank at least 2 grade levels higher than those educated in a public setting in both standardized math and reading tests. I assume that they will probably graduate from an accredited program 2 years earlier than their publically educated counterparts. I assume that they are not being socialized into thinking that sex is okay at the age of 11 as long as they are using the condoms that the school is handing out. I assume that they will be socialized in other settings including sports and programs chosen by the student and the parents, including but not limited to the arts, town league football for children and karate. I do not have the time to educate my children at home and am currently forced to place them in a public education setting. However, I have chosen to pay higher property taxes and a higher mortgage rate to have my child in the best school in the county. I commend parents that take the time to produce productive members of society. Great question!!

I have 2 friends who do this. One has 2 college scholarships and a State tennis champion, the eldest son of the other has recently been granted a 100 per cent scholarship.
The program is better than the US sub standard PC godless socialist nonsense "taught" in Public Schools. Of course I assume the parents are God loving child loving people who want to keep their kids away from the stupidity of public education and the anti Christ system. And if you do not believe the State system is anti Christ take a look at Germany where home schoolers can be jailed, their children taken from them using a law which was introduced by Hitler. We are in a war for the souls of our children.

the academic scores of home schooled children, their level of maturity is double that of the public schooled child....many of these children have graduated with 4.00 and have received full scholarship to many of the best colleges and universities in the country..

these children are not sheltered but enabled to receive an above average education in safety...by caring and supportive parents....

there is scheduled interaction with the other home school students within the area, science center field trips, visit and interact at a farm, one parent is the music teacher one day a week for a chamber group, one day a week every one will meet at the YMCA for swim day and exercise group, computer education from another parent one on one...

each state has a home schooling association with state accredited and approved subjects for each grade level...

These children are better educated, better equipped for the world than the children in public school.

the area where I live there are a few failures, some JW families home schooled their children...that combination of indoctrination and separation from the world will cause problems.....for the children and with the home school association...

I'm just glad to see more and more are home schooling.

When we did it, it wasn't popular at all.
Everyone prodding that it wasn't good for the social life of the kids.

But we did home school the oldest to get him away from the drugs that was prevalent in the school yard. The teachers outright told us there wasn't anything they could do about it.
That's when we pulled him out.

Bought an American School high school program for him.

Our daughter is a different story. 3 years later, she lost to much time due to illness. We bought and ICS program for her so she could continue while home healing.

We made both take a SAT test at the college and both excelled well. Both was classified in at 13 years of schooling. That put them equivalent to have one year of college.
Our son was 18 when he took the college test. Our daughter was 16.

The school district classified our kids as dropouts. But we are firmly resolved it was the best thing for both of them when we home schooled them with a established paid for curriculum
Both have diplomas

As a Christian I have found that I have a lot more information about the origins of the world and the theory of evolution and creationism than most people. It seems that the public school system is the one suppressing information, not the private or home-school educators. And yes. . . I was partially home-schooled and partially private school educated. I made up my own mind but yes. . . did receive a different "slant" than I would have been given in public school. That slant was to allow me to know all the evidence and then think for myself. Not just the partial evidence that supports the theory of popular choice!

I think that kids miss out on socialization and other "soft" skills you learn in school.

I used to think that home-schooled kids had a substandard education, until I watched a game show on TV in the last year. I can't remember the name of it, but it pitted kids against each other (kind of like the shows were schools competed against each other answering questions), and this home schooled kid was kicking butt.

But I do kind of prejudge when I hear it's a conservative Christian who does that. I think of the crazy lady on Wife Swap yelling "She's not a Christiaaaannnn!!!"

I assume that they know their family's needs and are doing what they think is best. My parents homeschooled my older brother, homeschooled my younger brother for 2 years, but I always went to public school. My parents were just paying attention to what was going on with their kids at school, and doing what they needed to make sure we were actually getting an education and not being distracted by bullying, teachers who didn't do their jobs well, etc.

PS- We all turned out ok... homeschooled brother is an artist, half homeschooled brother is in law school. And I turned out to be a housewife, despite my liberal education :-)

wow!! Great question. I am a Born again Bible Believing as some call it " FUNDIE"... homeschool mother to three. 11,6 and 4. We go to church, have Karate, go to classes at a Charter Based homeschool.
MY kids are soo withdrawn and so reclusive and they are so shy and just clam up when asked a question.
IF any of you actually believed that....HAHAHAHAHA.
My kids are very smart, vet active and very social. MY first grader is already reading chapter books ( 14 chaps or better) My daughter who is in the 6th grade is extremely smart when it comes to Math and Science and has a very creative mind.. My four year old is in training and doing great.
My kids aren't social outcasts. Every homeschooler I have met over the past several years have never once come across as "Withdrawn or socially retarded", in fact they are all the exact opposite.
Actually, two young ladies I new both graduated at 16, both homeschooled and they went to Jr. College and are now doing Fantastically in Bible College.
I am a happy homeschooling parent and my kids are happy to be homeschooled too.

Our decision to homeschool was not made lightly; it was a terrible upheaval for our family. It was made worse by the stereotypes and assumptions of people such as those made on this forum. May I share our experience?

I homeschooled my son for five years, not because of sheltering him from the world, but because of a substandard public school system with no private alternatives. People are worried about kids getting a poor education in science-my son couldn't even read after his public school "experience." While he was homeschooled he studied Latin, went on a Sea-Lab field trip in marine biology, took piano and karate lessons, in addition to regular schoolwork.

He is now in a private school, about to head off to a large public high school. His test scores are excellent, he has a girlfriend, hobbies, and he has exhibited no desire to be a mass murderer.

Thank you, Debra, for asking this question.
