I was out there the weekend before last and we found a fantastic little hotel on the Upper East Side - it was a short walk from Central Park and 5th Avenue. It is called Affinia Gardens and although a little bit more expensive than others it is in a beautiful neighbourhood and the rooms are absolutely massive. Have a look on Trip Advisor and all of the reviews are fantastic. They were incredibly helpful in arranging things for us and some of the rooms even had a little garden. The facilities are good with a little kitchenette and a small dressing area. The bed was massive and very comfortable. Compared to most hotel rooms in NY this was about triple the size.
Taxis were readily available to take us everywhere. Definately go to Macys and go to the visitor centre to get a discount card. Also just a block on from the Affinia Gardens is a restaurant called JoJo and next door Alices Tea Cup, two of the best places I have eaten and would thoroughly recommend them. Have a fantastic time.

I went to New York in July for 4 days and stayed at the holiday inn on 57th street, it was quite cheap and cheerful, it's quite near Central Park. Ive also heard alot of people mention hotel 30 30, although I don't know anything about that.

went to New York last month stayed in the New Yorker, 8th Ave. 41st St, it's near to Macy's, near to ESB, Madison Sqaure Gdns, Times Square quite central plenty of shops and eateries. Found the hotel to be lovely, hallways are a bit dingy, it's undergoing refurbishment at the moment, but you wouldn't know anything was going on. The room was very clean and comfortable, cleaned daily with clean towels and sheets(you can choose not to have sheets changed every day, we didn't feel it necessary, so it was every 3 days), it , staff all extremely helpful. For the amount of time you'll spend in your hotel room I think it's ideal. Will stay there next time I go,
Took daughter for her 18th, it was fabulous, have a great time - I'm very jealous!

Check out the Roosevelt Hotel in Midtown. It's a beautiful hotel very near Grand Central Station. I've stayed there several times and always been very happy with the quality of the rooms and service. Also, Travelzoo often runs a special on the rooms: $179/nt including the fantastic $25 breakfast in their lovely dining room. Please note, the price doesn't include taxes and other fees. However, it should be in your price range...especially since it includes a very generous full breakfast.

Going to New York at the last minute
My I recomment the New Yorker Hotel, which is located at 34th Street and 8th Avenue. The Hotel is one block west of Macy's Department Strore and the Manhattan Mall.
Another recommendation is the Sheraton Hotel Manhattan at West 53rd Street and 7th Avenue, near Times Square and the Times Square. The hotel is also close to the 5th Avenue Shopping District Both hotels are $400 (£200) per night.
Since this this your first time in New York, may I recomment some tourist attactions:
-Empire State Buidling
-Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island
-Rockefeller Center and the Top of the Rock Observation Deck, as well as the Christmas Tree (and a tour of NBC studios)
-Times Square (no trip is complete without visit to the"Crossroads of the World")
-Lower Manhattan/Wall Street Area
-Central Park
-Brooklyn Birdge (you can walk across it too)
-Grand Central Terminal (largest railroad terminal in the country)
-Museum Mile (Fifth Avenue from East 86 to East 103 Streets)
-Museum of Natural History
-MoMa
-Broadway Show
-Christmas Spectacular
-A Ride on the Staten Island Ferry (its free and you can see the Statue of Liberty as the ferry crosses the harbor)
-Sightseening tour on a Double Decker Bus
And since this is a shopping tour may I recommend the following:
-Macy's (West 34th Street and Broadway in the heart of Hearld Square)
-Bloomingdale's (Lexington Avenue at East 59 and East 60 Streets)
-The shops along Fifth Avenue (just don't max out you credit cards)
-FAO Schwarz (you know famous for the movie "Big")
-Toys "R" Us in Times Square
-Lord and Taylor (5th Avenue at East 38th Street)
-Chinatown/Canal Street Area (if you want to go on the cheap for the stuff you can't get on Fifth Avenue)
-NBA Store (for the basketball fan - 5th Avenue at East 52nd Street)
-The Apple Computer Store (East 59th Street and Fifth Avenue)
-The Time Warner Center (West 59th Street - Columbus Circle)
-Hershey Store (for those with a sweet tooth)
-Grand Central Terminal (for the shopping)
I hope this information was very helpful, cheers

I stayed in the Rockerfeller Centre Hotel, last year, on 51st between 5th and 6th, opposite the NBC Studios. I found it to be one of the cheaper midtown hotels, clean, and well appointed rooms. Within walking distance of many tourist sites such as Times Sq, Empire State, Broadway etc.

Have you tried Expedia/Travelocity/Orbitz? The area you will probably want is Times Square/Midtown - that's close to many "attractions" and to the transit system so you can get anywhere you want to go.
For reviews from past guests on any of the hotels you might be interested in, go to TripAdvisor.com.
