Will my ps2 play euro imports?

I was wondering if imported a ps2 game from europe (age of empires II) if it would play on my american ps2, w/o any modding.

Officially, nothing, however, there are modchips or Swapdisc sets available on the gray market. They unlock regions. But it's ILLEGAL!

PS2 is region restiricted
unlike PSP and PS3 which are region free for games but not movies
