Cakes and pies make wonderful gifts. Make it something delicious but also a bit unusual or decadent. You don't want to give a plain chocolate cake with store bought icing though. Put a little love in it..... and it will be a huge hit!
Also, pies and cakes are very easily frozen and kept for later or better yet, would help someone out to have a dessert on hand for those guests that just drop by.
Good for you.......... :) And besides... baking is NOT cheap. Once you figure out all the ingredient costs and your time, not cheap at all.

I think making home baked goods for those who would appreciate them are wonderful gifts and certainly not cheap to do. There are those who wouldn't appreciate the meaning of such a gift and that's unfortunate. I don't give gifts to people who think that way.I've also made photo cards and oils for the bath, etc. Those I give them to love them and hint that they hope I'll make more..
Many complain about the commercialism and the money spent at Christmas, yet they continue being a part of it by spending far more than they should, on gifts that many people don't even want. I like the simple homemade gifts and appreciate those the most, and the thought that goes into them..
Each year I bake many types of homemade breads and goodies for different people. Some have been very disappointed when they didn't get any! As for the cake, I make a blueberry cake every year for a man in his 80's because he loves the cake.. One year I didn't do it and he was awfully disappointed! This year due to circumstances I will only be making just a few goodies and I know there will be some who will be looking for them.. Just look at who is getting your gift and judge from there if it will be well received.. Have a wonderful Christmas...

I personally think it is a wonderful gift....i wish more people would get back to the basics during christmas...its hard enough to make ends meet and so many people stay so stressed regarding gift giving and the truth of the matter life would be much easier if we could just enjoy each others company instead of figuring out how you can pay your light bill and buy gifts for people you rarely see to begin with....and even worse so many are going in debt for gifts that really doesn't even impact peoples lives most of the time....i say two thumbs up on giving homemade goodies as gifts....its a wonderful gift and don't let anyone tell you different....if they aren't appreciative of it then they are the one that needs to focus what the real meaning is of the season....merry christmas! oh, checkout this website for many holiday ideas and recipes....

I tried this once. It will be the last time too. I made a cake and nobody looked at it and everybody complained about the surgar and fat. So much for a family gift! This year everyone is getting T-shirts from Jcrew or old navy. At least that is something.

I think a baked pie or cake is a wonderful and thoughtful gift. If it were me, I would definitely appreciate it. I really don't think it's a cheap gift either, it's a lovely gift.

Depending on what kind of pie you are making, it's definately not a cheap gift by the time you purchase the ingredients.
I would definately appreciate a home-baked pie or cake... what time will you be coming over to deliver my home-baked goodie? LOL!

Any yahoo can buy donuts in the store for 3.99.
All the ingredients, time and energy put into baking is a lot more than that.
If personal touch items were considered cheap, Martha Stewart would be a nobody.
And I know it's appreciated. I work in a large office. Pot luck lunches prove home made is gone and store bought is a left over. MUCH appreciated, and I speak for hundreds.

Take the receiver into account. If it is a child, then don't give it. If it is an adult, then consider how well they know you. Anyone who knows you well will know the effort you put into it. Also, anyone who is a coworker or boss, or someone who might not get you a gift, that would be a good present because it won't necessarily make them feel like they have to buy you something in return.

You have to take the people you would be giving them to into account,.. and if they would be appreciative.
Personally, it's a big thing in my family as we are all avid cooks and bakers. Often we give a person a particular cake or pie they enjoy immensely, and include the recipe hand written on a card.

While baking is relatively inexpensive, and you can give the goodies to many people, it is still a personal gift. I wouldn't classify it as cheap but thoughtful instead.
