For a country that's getting "slapped" for not doing "enough" I can say I am really proud of this announcement because I know I fought to have something down about one of the largest polluters in our area for YEARS without getting ANYWHERE, so the fact that Baird has given the top 700 polluters a deadline for reporting on Greenhouse emissions and then DOING something about otherwise risking huge fines, it is indeed a HUGE step in the right direction. However it should go even deeper than just fines. They have to be big enough to put a dent and incentive into their making these changes.

This is the type of thing that all countries should do and should have done from day one. Agreed?

Now I just hope environmentalists put pressure and raise awareness to the communities involved so they can keep on top of their local government officials too.

Absolutely a step in the right direction.

The US Senate is considering something similar, but I expect only a weak version could be made law right now. Real action will start January 20, 2009.

I LUV NY - That's a good article on global warming. You should read it:

"The majority of climate scientists agree that global warming is primarily caused by human activities such as fossil fuel burning and deforestation.[15][16][17] The conclusion that global warming is mainly caused by human activity and will continue if greenhouse gas emissions are not reduced has been endorsed by at least 30 scientific societies and academies of science, including all of the national academies of science of the major industrialized countries. The U.S. National Academy of Sciences,[18] the American Association for the Advancement of Science,[19] and the Joint Science Academies of the major industrialized and developing nations[20] explicitly use the word "consensus" when referring to this conclusion.

A 2004 essay by Naomi Oreskes in the journal Science reported a survey of 928 abstracts of peer-reviewed papers related to global climate change in the ISI database.[21] Oreskes stated that "Remarkably, none of the papers disagreed with the consensus position. ... This analysis shows that scientists publishing in the peer-reviewed literature agree with IPCC, the National Academy of Sciences, and the public statements of their professional societies." Benny Peiser claimed to have found flaws in Oreskes' work,[22] but his attempted refutation is disputed.[23][24][25] Peiser later withdrew parts of his criticism, also commenting that "the overwhelming majority of climatologists is agreed that the current warming period is mostly due to human impact. However, this majority consensus is far from unanimous."

10! = 10 x 9 x 8 x 7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 the last part (from 4 x 3 x 2 x 1) is just 4! so 10! = 10 x 9 x 8 x 7 x 6 x 5 x 4! so 10! / 4! = 10 x 9 x 8 x 7 x 6 x 5 = 151,200 since the 4! cancel it out from top and bottom

What are your 700 biggest polluters? The article never said what those industries were. And did these polluters do anything about SO2 when we were all worried about acid rain? Do we have any idea what else the scrubbers that were installed during that period are also reducing from being emitted into the air?

If the globe is warming, it's not because of human activity: it's a natural cycle. Check the link below for some commentary on the controversy.

Yes this is good news.

I'm sure if these companies wanted to move south, they would be welcomed with open arms.
