Sahara is correct, except for her final comment. RNs receive the degree for which they study. Some RNs attend an associates degree program, some attend a bachelors degree program (BSN). There are RNs who have gone on for additional education who have masters degrees and work in some form of advanced practice (MSN) such as nurse practitioners and nurse anesthetist. And some RNs continue further and get a doctoral degree dependent on their desire for how to use the degree usually a DNS, Ph.D, or Ed.D.
Nurses are usually hired for their inital position based upon the RN designation, however, in attempts at advancing in the field of nursing the higher degrees are a benefit in obtaining the better positions.

A degree shows that a student has mastered a certain level of education and thinking. They have received either training in a specific field or a more broad-based field and can work in different industries. I have a B.S. in Business. (bachelors of science) I could go into management or administration or marketing or sales. Industries is unlimited. It shows discipline, character, and an ability to learn. It is a way of differentiating yourself from the competition. Degrees are usually from different schools (business, education, social work, nursing, arts & sciences, etc.) but they can also be quite specialized. Just a bachelors degree or a college degree is pretty vague. There are associates degree (2 years of college), bachelors degrees (4 to 5 years), masters (additional 2-3 years), and PhD (4 or more years). JD is a law degree and is 3 years. Medical school is another 4 years after receiving a bachelors degree. I believe veterinary school is either 3 or 4 years. Nursing school is all over the place depending on the degree you want.
