Doing the dishes used to be a pain in the butt for me. I thought buying a dishwasher would help ease that burden but then I realized that loading the dishwasher was just as bothersome as actually doing them by hand. And of course, when you finish cleaning them and a new item appears in that sink of course you feel a bit...ticked almost. LOL.
I learned that it wasn't cleaning the dishes that bothered me. It was the fact that I was bored while I was doing them.
Both my wife and I take on the responsibility of cleaning the dishes. I'd say I do them more because she's busy with other things that I don't do as much like cooking or cleaning. But we both agree on one thing ; No matter what the chore is it's always so much better when we have each others company.
I can't count the number of times I've been washing the dishes by hand or loading the dishwasher while she's sitting at the table and we're just talking and laughing as we discuss each others day and I don't even realize I'm doing this chore (washing the dishes; not talking to my wife. LOL) . And vice versa as well.
If you don't have something to take your mind off the work you're about to do [dishes] then I'd advise you to leave the new dirty items in the sink and let it wait until the next cycle.

What I really hate is when I'm done washing a big heap of dirty dishes and like an hour later there is a new heap, just as big, waiting in the zink and I just know that nobody else will be bothered to wash it.
When I myself use just one glass or a spoon I usually wash it right away, because I hate when the zink is full of dirty things.

LOL!! Happens all the time in my house. And the excuse used to be, "But the dishwasher was full of clean dishes, so I couldn't put it up." Now the culprit has to empty the dishwasher first, then wash their plates. Since everyone hates emptying the dishwasher, this cut down on the stragler plates/cups/etc.

Oh I wait till the next load. With mum, dad and 4 teenagers in the house, and despite our diligence, there's always missed dishes or glasses in bedrooms, lounge rooms and on the balcony. We have a lived in place here!

I have a dishwasher and as soon as it's finished running I empty so it can start being filled again. No dirty dishes sit in the sink here.

I hand wash everything (no dishwasher), so if my hands are finally out of the soap and water and dry and I've used hand lotion, the new dirty dishes stay dirty until the next full sink.

i live in a house full of boys so its more like "just finished the dishes and the sinks full again" type thing so i know how you feel if its one dish i usually rinse it really quick before it fills up again.
