I have heard that a lot of the cheap immigrant workers live in caravans - they can't afford proper housing.

The UK has had a pretty high standard of living so far -- is it a good idea to encourage wages so low that the standard of living is dragged down?

Here in the states 'business' keeps trying to convince the public that we'll all financially crash and burn if we stop illegal immigration. For some 'industries' that may be true...fast food ferinstance! On the plus side if all the 'fast food' joints closed we'd get back all those mom and pop cafes we used to have. Cafes where a middle aged waitress named 'Bev' with her beehive hairdo and those glasses that sweep up on the ends like a chinese coolie took your order and called 'ya 'hon'! Sure it would cost a little more, but we'd get something of social value in exchange. All of us need to control our borders, and more than that it's our right to do it....not to mention that it's 'our government's responsibility to do it. Importing people to work for low wages only mean high profits profits for the few and massive social expenses for the many. Not a good trade off. No kiddin'!

So where are they getting the caravans from? Employers can't be providing them all. The government loves all this cheap labour, makes the bosses richer after all. Who cares that your average Brit is paying the price right across the board. Don't forget also that we taxpayers are subsidising the low paid immigrant. Low paid workers qualify for "working tax credits" once in receipt of that they get loads of other benefits eg rent rebates etc. So not only are they driving down wages we taxpayers are rewarding them for it. Are we Mad!!!! Not much of an incentive to the indigenous lazy b******s is it when an immigrant is taking the job they might, just might, have applied for. This country is heading for melt-down and it is our own fault for sitting back and doing nothing.

The thing is the government are conveniently turning a blind eye to the wage structure of a lot of immigrant's, they think they are been PC and doing them a favour by letting them work for peanuts.
When all they are doing is exploiting those that come here for a better life, you are correct in saying that they are dragging the standard of living down in this country for Brits who simply cant afford to work for peanuts . It will back fire on this country in the end Mark my words !!

Because it brings more competition which could drive fellow Americans out of the productive jobs. I agree that if spaceships come and they drive all these immigrants out of the country, American economy will go to a downward spiral. Forget about inflation and cheap labor, even the basic goods will become costly for fellow Americans. Everyone knows that the cost of goods is less when demand is more and vice versa. Even bread will become dearer. Look to the nations which stopped influx. All basic amenities have become costlier. Guys be realistic. Why not turn them into more saleable citizens so that they earn well for us and the Statue of Liberty.

I'm British but have no choice but to do live-in care work cos if I lived out and do community care work I can't afford to even rent a room unless I work 70+ hours a week.
Don't get me wrong,I do like the work if I'm with somebody nice but for free rent I am on duty 22/7(154+ hours a week) and sacrifice my entire life for about £200-£300 a week but this is what the UK has come to.The government don't care!!!!

It always works to the long-term detriment of a principality to import cheap immigrant labor. It isn't working in the United States, and it will fail even faster in Great Britain.

too late , it started all ready. Even employers of immigrants should be forced to pay correct minimal wages, taxes Ni's so they may not see the benefit in hiring immigrants.
People employing any people illegally should be locked up and all there assets taken from them.
