Ok, Hubby says he wants the box that controls the surround sound, but doesn't know what it is and doesn't think they sell it separate from the speakers. He specifies that it isn't a receiver. Does anyone know what he's talking about? I asked if he was talking about the Blue Ray and he said no.

If he can't specify what he wants other than "the box that controls the surround sound" then he has no business asking for one.

Tell him to specify a manufacturer and model number, either the one he wants or as an example. Then come back and ask us again.

He might either:

- not know what he is talking about
- might be talking about a pre-processor

An AV receiver is actually 2 major devices in 1 box. The amplifier, and an electronics package that knows how to decode & switch audio & video. The electronics are know as the "Pre Amp" or "Pre Processor".

Higher end systems separate the electronics into 1 smaller box, and a external amplifier.

Find out if this is what he is talking about. If so - search for "Adcom" or follow the link below to Outlaw Audio that sells preprocessors and amp systems.

Well your hubby is right but then again he is wrong, and I'd say he was mainly wrong. or he would of known the name of the piece of equipment he is looking for, and how it is used.
There is a box called a pre-amp, that will do all the controlling of the surround sound, but it will do nothing without a amp hooked up to it , which makes it twice the cost of the receiver, which will also do all the controlling of the surround sound.

first thing I would do is ask him wht the $%ck he is talking about to make it easier for you. My thought would be that he is talking about some sort of control system to control the TV and AV receiver. Check out AMX.com, they have the best stuff on the market. I would spcifically look at an NI-4100 controller and a 17" Modero touch panel. Show up with that stuff and he may last more than 30 seconds in bed that night. ;)
