I believe Star Trek is just taking a breather. The previous series had a good following. I think anyone that has been fans in the past will be back when the network decides when the next installment will be. There is so many familiar places, people, and terminology that does not need inventing. It just will be a little time until "the time is right". The last four series they just shot out back to back and it was time for a break.

There will always be a hard core of fans who will make it worth while to keep the franchise going, but while no new Trek is being shown it's popularity is bound to be on the decline.

It just takes one popular success from the Star Trek franchise to take it's popularity back up to it's former heights, however (the forthcoming Star Trek movie perhaps).

Look at what happened to Doctor Who between it's cancellation in 1989 and it's revival in 2005. It's overall popularity decreased so much that there was a whole generation who had either never heard of it, or simply treated it as an oddity from the past. A hard core of fans made sure there was enough interest in it to keep a series of novels and audio plays going, however. Now, since it started again in 2005, it has become one of the most popular programmes on British television again and has created world wide interest.

The same type of revival in popularity could happen for Star Trek, if those in charge of the franchise play their cards right.

The franchise of Star Trek got killed off by Star Trek: Enterprise staring Scott Bakula and after 4 seasons the show got cancelled.
The last Star Trek movie was over five years ago in 2002, this was the 10th movie of the franchise staring The TNG casts and called Nemesis. Hopefully this time next year Star Trek IX (Star Trek 11) will put the franchise back on track.
And i totally agree with what Spacephantom says about reviving old Sci-Fi shows i.e. Doctor Who. This also mite happen with Red Dwarf some day soon.

Hopefully the close release of the Star Trek movie and Star Trek Online will get some real interest back into it...

I still maintain that Enterprise wasn't a bad series and it was a shame it was cut off so quickly, if they allowed them to explore further into the creation of the Federation it may of gone down better at the end, they rushed it.

It'll never die... I'd still like to see a Romulan spin-off series, but it'll never happen... but until we get a "Data" comedy spin-off.... it's clear sailing as far as the 'vision' goes....

As the person above me said, there's too many possibilities, all the locations and terms are set, it's just a case of getting the right story.

My husband is a real Star Trek fan. The bookshelves are full of Star Trek videos. He's replaced a lot of them with DVDs, but hasn't been able to sell the video tapes. He also has annuals that don't sell. From that, it would seem that either Star Trek is not so popular now, or that everyone who enjoys it already has all the books and videos.

If it is, the popularity may just start up again as they are planning on coming up with a new Star Trek movie at the theaters. This one is going to feature Mr. Spock his childhood and family with Leonard Nimoy. For some reason William Schattner was not asked to be in it.

there arent any new episodes to show. the last series with scott bakula was so awfull they cancelled it and a lot of people are getting sick with the same repeats shown over and over again. i have seen almost every episode of the next gen, the original series (I have all 3 seasons on dvd) and deep space nine about 5 or 6 times now. i love star trek but unfortunatley not everyone loves it as much as i do.

I'm dreading the new film, enterprise looked stupid as it was suppose to pre date the first series with shatner and nimmoy but was far too modern to do that and most of the acting was worse than the original.
how can they re create the original series as a film?
you cant replace or recreate the atmosphere and banter between bones, spock and kirk's characters. it ill end up like the last next gen film, not very good and possibly just like an over extended tv episode but without all the characters you have grown up to love over the years.

Star Trek started waning in popularity when the original Captain Kirk was replaced by the uptight bald Englishman with his 'Number one' second in command.
The democracy of America who originated the series in the first place, was usurped by the sixth form of the English public school.
