"Is any among you sick? Let him call for the presbyters of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven" (James 5:14-15).
Any one physically or mentally ill, aged and infirm, or about to receive surgery can receive this sacrament of healing.
The liturgical actions in the Anointing of the Sick include the following principal elements:
+ Scripture is read.
+ The priests of the Church in silence lay hands on the sick.
+ They pray over them in the faith of the Church
+ They anoint them with oil blessed by the bishop.
The effects of the Anointing of the sick are:
- Uniting of the sick person to the passion of Christ, for his own good and that of the whole Church
- The strengthening, peace, and courage to endure in a Christian manner the sufferings of illness

The focus of this sacrament is on Jesus the healer.
We have been missioned by Jesus to minister to those in need of healing during times of illness. "He summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two.... They anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them" (see Mark 6:7-13).
We know that the early Church followed this practice. Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven" (James 5: 14-15).
In many parishes there are regular celebrations of the sacrament of annointing. In my parish twice a year those with chronic illnesses gather for Mass and Annointing of the Sick.
For a great article on the Annointing of the Sick see the Catholic Update: http://www.americancatholic.org/Newsletters/CU/ac0196.asp

It used to be called Extreme Unction - it comprises anointing the sick person with sacred oils, on forehead, lips and chest there are bible readings and prayers. The sick person will be given Communion - ideally they will have made a confession before receiving the Sacrament of the Sick.
