I need a graphics package which will allow me to create a block of colour with a lighting effect at the top or in the corner or somewhere else.

E.g. for a black block and with the light source at the top, the square would be grey at the top and gradually become darker towards the bottom.

Ideally, the package would be free :-) but I don't mind shelling out a few dollars if it is fairly decent. It'd have to be downloadable though as time may be tight on this project.

Most will do this .. terms used include 'gradient' and 'vignette'

I would use PaintShop Pro.

Set up the gradient colour on a new (semi-transparent) layer, rotate & position the layer over the original surface and then 'rub out' the parts you don't need.

Finally you 'merge down' the new layer onto the original (making sure to set the appropriate degree of transparency )

Well I have a few packages in mind. I have Ulead videostudio 8, which can do that. There's also a fully functional trial version of adobe photoshop CS3 currently available. It has many tools. There's paint.NET, photofiltre and FXphoto. Try searching for freeware graphics programs in google. There are plenty out there to download.
