As adept as human beings are at a lot of things, you'd think we'd have this aspect of our interaction with each other a little more "finessed", given all the techniques & devices out there...(learning curve notwithstanding)

Sure we are. We're also capable of refraining from acts of murder, ending war, refraining from self-destruction, abolishing racism, slowing the destruction of our planet, solving the issue of world hunger, and being civil to one another too. But like most things that don't get done, we have other priorities.

Once the learning curve spends some time and energy on learning the right curves safely and safely negotiating the curves, yes, we are quite capable of doing well, on that score!
