Well I think the "Chemist Warehouses" are very big stores. The one in Cairns is anyhow.
Heaps of gifts - even perfumes down from $128 to $17 ! All well know brands too.

Priceline is kind of like Boots/Superdrug. Toiletries and gifts are found in Myer/DJ's/K Mart and Target. Go to a hairdresser for shampoo, or....the supermarket?? Boots is usually cheaper than Sainsburies for shampoo etc, but here Woolies is cheaper than a pharmacy for both shampoo and make up, that's why you won't find as much choice in a pharmacy - because not many people are silly enough to buy them there. And as for make up, if you want cheap brands like at Boots and Superdrug, Priceline or Target has all that, but if you want proper brands you go to Myer, or David Jones. I can't think of any "big, stylish" DIY stores in the UK at all?? Do you mean like Habitat? Freedom furniture is here, and it's similar to Habitat but with furniture as well.
Perhaps you just didn't look hard enough ;)

Ok, call me a philestine, but does anyone else thing that buying your Christmas gifts at a pharmacy a little tacky?
The primary use for pharmacies or chemists is to sell medications and prescription drugs for ailments, diseases, infections and other such things. Most pharmacies stock cosmetics and toiletries and other similar items in Australia anyway, so why bother changing it?
If you want to be normal and buy your gifts/makeup/shampoo at shops then you have a fantastic choice at David Jones, Myer, Kmart, Target, Woolworths, Coles, Franklins, Priceline (Priceline is basically like chemists anyway but without the prescription drugs) or any other selection of shops.
Seeing as you have more than ample choice, I see no reason to change it.
Also, I remember when I was younger, pharmacies and chemists were asking their customers to sign petitions to stop prescription drugs being sold in supermarkets because it would drive them out of business, and lessen the personal care given when it comes to one's health.
If it isn't broken, then why fix it?

How big a choice do you want?
I think we have what we need here . May be you are looking in the wrong places for what you want. Shampoos we can get at the supermarket.
I think to expect the same things as in the UK is unreasonable. If you want shops like in the UK - then stay there.
The whole point of visitng another country is because of the differences.
home decor? we have department stores for that.
cheers

We encourage people to go to privately owned pharmacies for medical items, as the prices are better and the advice more reliable. Why do you need big department stores? They only make it harder for individuals to get by.
If you want hair products, go to a hair dresser's, or a normal department store like Myer, Kmart or Target. David Jones if you're feeling classy. Same goes for makeup. It's more important for pharmacies to be able to give you appropriate medical items, isn't it? And most carry a range of the items you mentioned, but they're secondary.

I avoid overcrowded big pharmacies like the plague. If I want to get a prescription filled I don't want to be bothered by people buying shampoo when they can get it quicker and cheaper at the supermarket. Pharmacies are for medicines. If you want toiletries etc, what's wrong with the supermarket?

When we were in Melbourne earlier this year we found a huge chemist that had everything you could think of in it, we went crazy buying stuff because of the massive choice and the cheap prices, the DIY stores are out of this world up to the likes of B&Q here, I found the choices to be better in Australia.
