Because they use that believe as a shield to defend their own inadecuasies. Isn't one of the reasons people adopt religion, because they have the need to fulfill a hollow existence? Our lives are so full, that we don't have that need. I enjoy everything in life without the religious hangover and the guilty feeling that everything I do is a sin, waiting for a ficticious pardon from a ficticious being. If I die and then discover that I was wrong, at least I enjoyed life here without regrets.

Because most Christians who do not ever get the chance to sit down and understand the thoughts of the everyday Atheist do not know what to think and are probably uncomfortable around them. Atheists remind someone who is religious about mortality. They see an Atheist as thinking "there is no God, we are just here, biological, then we die, then there is nothing, I go in the ground, it goes black, i dont exist, and the body rots away." For a christian to look at someone thinking that, they would come off as it must be depressing...nothing to look forward to...empty..."
I am a Christian but I do agree that some "Church's" are hypocritcal and pushy and very judgemental of people outside of their church. I think this just pushes people away. I took a long time to search for my own self and figure out what me as an individual believe in this life, not what the mass expects me to believe.
I do not think any of those things about you. I am sure you live a great life, its up to you as an individual to look at yourself and the world and everything and decide what you believe.
There will always be Faiths judging people, but on the other hand there are Atheist's who judge people of Faith. I wish it all ran a little smoother but unfortunatly, people want to jump into other peoples lives.

I am guilty of thinking that way from time to time and I apologize.
I just look to the average life span: 60-80 years and then you die.
I'd hate to be an atheist because there doesn't seem to be much hope or future. You go to work, hang out with friends, go to bed and then do it all over again until you die.
As a Christian, I look beyond the hum-drum of every day life and beyond those 60-80 years and keep eternity in view. This life, with all it's problems really stinks at times lol. It will be so wonderful to live during absolute peace and health where I can learn so much and not have to worry about forgetting it.

I don't think they lead horrible empty lives, but when I am called upon as a friend to offer comfort in their time of need I find it difficult that they can't relate to a higher power who has a plan for their lives. Also, it just seems like the peace of God is never there. I'm sure that sounds like an obvious statement since they don't believe in God, but there is a striking difference in times of trouble between an atheist and a believer of any faith.

As Christians, we don't lots look at the here and now, yet on the hereafter. To us, we hit upon it complicated to comprehend what atheists have faith, that once you die there isn't something. To us it incredibly is gloomy that those people stay there lives thinking this. which you men, as all of us do, stay throughout the time of the hardships of existence, soreness, unhappiness, loss of kinfolk, affliction and all the different issues that existence throws at us, inquisitive approximately not something. For Christians who've the promise of delight and happiness after loss of life, an athiests existence does look unhappy and empty. To you our lives might look boring and boring as you're on the outdoors looking in. turning out to be up as a Catholic who in basic terms attended church as quickly as a week without incredibly comprehend-how what exchange into happening, i will make certain what you're saying. yet once you have been to ascertain Christianity greater heavily, and definitely get to comprehend some Christians who're "alive" or "on hearth" you'll be stunned! existence as a Christian is by way of no potential unhappy and empty, and we do comprehend how particular existence is. we are living daily with exhilaration and happiness, as all of us comprehend that we are enjoyed and cared for the author of the Universe, and we've a brilliant destiny that not even loss of life can get rid of from us. thank you for asking the query, and that i desire which you will proceed to invite greater questions so as which you're able to have a greater suitable comprehend-how of what Christians have faith.

Many religious people look at atheists this way because they are resentful. Most of them have either been brought up in their religion and have had all of these misconstrued restrictions shoved down their throats from birth and have been told it is the only way to live, or have come to the religion later in life and don't think it's right that they are the only ones who have had to give things up to "be saved". Basically they aren't finding the true fulfillment in their own lives that they were told they would have if they did all this sacrificing and suffering, and they sure don't want to see anyone else fulfilled either.
What amazes me is that these people think they've got it right when all structured religion has taught them is to act superior to anyone outside of their box, to persecute those who don't think like they do, and to make sure they put this guilt-filled fear fest on their children's heads before they die. All to be sure they have saved themselves a spot in heaven. Sounds pretty selfish to me. Where is there salvation in that?
I am not an atheist and I am a believer in God and Yeshua, but from what I've seen they have happiness and fulfillment above anyone else, and have allowed themselves to become more educated about religion than most religious people. They will probably be the first ones let into heaven for not pushing such bullshit on their fellow man. I think that God would prefer someone who didn't believe in Him at all over someone who would twist and corrupt His word so badly.

Because those people ARE submissively religious, and derive great satisfaction from it.
In many cases their religion is not only their spirituality, but their community and family and politics as well. To them atheism is to be ripped from all of the above, and so they can only see this as an emptiness of everything they hold dear.
The problem is their inability to think of things from another's point of view, and thus the inability to understand.

As an intellectual exercise, describe the taste of salt to someone who has never tasted salt or describe the color yellow to a person blind from birth.
Belief is like an inner vision that can only be described by those who have experience with it. Not all experience it the same, some have little feeling for it, much like people and music, I suppose. Some people can write concerts, some can't play a note.
So when Atheists decry people's belief, they are really describing their own lack of perception. That is why some would describe the lack of belief as an empty life. No one is trying to harm you for that, only describing the difference that they perceive in the world.
BTW, being submissive to ones beliefs is a spiritual journey that can be as exhilarating and challenging as any secular pursuit, it requires discipline, focus, inner change and expanded social consciousness. The rewards are heavenly.
Hope this helps.

Because they won't entertain even the possibility that there might be a creator or God of some kind. To some, they seem very cold, narrowminded for not having belief in anything aside from human consciousness.
Oh, and non-atheists are hardly "submissively religious" as a category.

People fear what they don't understand....So they make up rationalizations. They can't imagine living a life without a crutch or imaginary friend. I used to think those things when I was a Christian. My life is much more worth living knowing that I am not following the rules of a 2000 year old ignorant culture.
