Because in medieval times life was often harsh. The church didn't want their whole congregation coming to the obvious conclusion and ending their lives right there and then to gain the kingdom of god. So they made it a sin.

Free will is similar to Free speech in the sense that word Free - can be used as a catch all in order to absolve a person of all responsability. Technically speaking there is nothing stopping you ending your life - as you are in control of your own actions. There are the moral implications e.g. what about the consequences of your actions from the people who might discover your dead body and have to deal with your effects to friends and family and how they feel.
However ultimately it is your choice and whether you are totally selfish (I use that word in the literary sense not in judgement of your right to end your life) person and feel that your feelings and what you want supercedes anything and everyone else!

free will involves our right to make decisions that would not ultimately hurt others as well.when a person thinks ending their life will only be ending their life, they come to a wrong conclusion. not only may the attempt go unsuccessful resulting in a great deal of pain, but family, friends, and loved ones would be deeply affected at the result of attempting or accomplishing the ending of ones own life. It wouldn't be right to leave people who loved and were close to the person behind in anguish and misery.

We don't own our life. It belongs to God. He alone can take it and give it when He wants. Freedom is to do what we ought to do . It means to do the right thing. If we do wrong, we are not free. We become slaves to sin. So free will is to do what is good. That way we are free from sin and truly free. Killing or murder is slavery to sin. To kill is against the will of God including taking our own life. So life is a gift and we must take care of it to go to heaven.

Just because something is possible doesn't mean it's OK to do.
God makes the rules, and his rules have been sufficiently clear and understood by all ... even if not acknowledged or accepted by all ... for some 2000 years.
Every choice and every action has consequences ... many of them eternal.
Do whatever you want. But remember, man is destined once to die ... and then the Judgment.

Within all of us exists one overlying necessity....to survive. As a being, as an individual, as a group, as a species.
Ending your own life goes against everything that principle is in place for. Besides, being given free will means you can think about it....doesn't necessarily mean you should do it.

We do have free will to do whatever we choose to do. But there are consequences for the things that we choose to do with our lives. There are good consequences and bad consequences. I'm pretty certain that self murder carries a bad consequence.

Free will means we have the ability to make real choices. In particular, we can accept or reject God who made us. Love cannot exist if we are not able to chose to accept or reject. Free will does not mean there are not consequences for our decisions.

Why throw a gift like life away, when there are so many others clinging to what life they have left?
Suicide is still murder, you know.
