I have three Pits, too! Along with four other dogs. I rescued my Pits from being put down. They are such wonderful cuties!
I'd rescue some more if I had more room and money!

I have rescued a small pit bull that is so sweet and so thankful to have food and care. It has taken over a year to just get the mistreated dog to come out of a doghouse and run around and have a good time and bark like a normal dog. He must have been beaten so badly. If you reprimand him in anyway he just screams but he's very slowly getting better and it's finally getting through that he's safe here and will not ever be mistreated again. Every breed of dogs has tendencies and that's what they were bred for. Pit bulls have a tendency to bite and tear and sometimes cannot be trusted and can get aggressive dispite their training. Be careful with any dogs that run in a pack. They lose their training and can be dangerous especially to small children and other small animals. Dobermans used to be that way and now have been bred to not be so aggressive lately. I have always had chows and they tend to be that way too. MIne are sweet but bear watching around those that cannot defend themselves. Just be careful because you are the one that goes to jail if anyone get hurt and the laws are getting severe. Doesn't mean they aren't the sweetest things around you, just be careful with them for their sake. Not every pit bull that has been treated nicely is nice and that's why they have the reputation but I do know a lot of very nice pit bulls.

I prefer the Bull Terrier but I like all bull breeds.
And they were bred in england after fighting became illegal to be "Nanny Dogs" so yes they are supposed to be great with children.
Theyre misunderstood: media controls the masses as they say, really the actual number of people killed by REAL pitbulls is like 3 a year more people die from car accidents than they do from dogs and cars are legal.
The hype they get about being aggressive is true for puppy mill puppies and BYBred dogs (they are not as socialized and have unknown temperments), well bred Am Pits should never be aggressive and in england even when fighting was legal dogs were bred to NOT attack people, how could the handlers seperate them in the ring if they got bit, they didnt even fight to the death then? Todays fighters are horribly mistreated, the people are corrupt and hopefully enough dogs will keep losing fights that they kill all of their own dogs out of sheer stupidity.

you know more about dogs than most the idiots in this forum it seems and you're right about pits so theres not much point even debating with them. all I can give you is the experience with my two current dogs which are a dogue de Bordeaux and a boerboel. both huge mastiff dogs, so you can relate to something similar like a dane or big American bulldog. they don't do well in small apartments ( my ones anyway). they love being outside all day, watching birds and barking at people and they both need a lot of exercise. my boerboel can run forever and they need two long walks/off lead running a day to chill them out. plus when they come inside to watch tv with me and sleep etc they do take up a sofa each so they don't leave too much room. the only big problem I have though with my dogs is dog aggression. despite being an experienced owner and having them in behaviour classes since puppies. most male mastiff types have dog aggression like pitbulls and my male Bordeaux can not go anywhere public off lead or even be around other dogs now. he gets on great with my female boerboel and even the cats at my house but other dogs is not possible, so you may also have that problem with a great dane and pit. a husky is gonna need a huge amount of exercise and it doesn't sound like you will have enough time for that unless you go running with it every morning I guess, then it would be good. but I think your best bet would be to get a pitbull. you understand the breed, they are small enough to do well in an apartment and bathe in a tub etc and theres enough of them about needing a good home. you sound like a great match for one.

Any breed has the potential to be great if handled with understanding!
I'm sure for every 'bad' Pit there are thousands of 'good'!
They don't appeal to me personally but then there are lots of breeds that don't! I do however own a breed that is also seen as a 'dangerous' one and have had a great many others over 50 years, but like the APT if treated correctly and socialised properly they are wonderful dogs!
It's not the breed it's the owner and the misunderstanding of dogs that makes a 'bad' dog!

I love my pit and the other 5 that I have known their entire lives. None of them have ever hurt anything. People who say they have seen too many bad pits have been looking in teh wrong places. I don't know anyone who works with dogs that would say this. The only people who would are ignorant people who get all their knowledge from teh news media. Pitbulls have a better/funnier/more loving personality than any other dog breed.

Pitbulls are courageous, loyal and wonderful dogs. That will like children and other animals if they have been socialized at a young age. Pitbulls are not for everyone, our media has people living in fear because they have biased opinions. What makes me angry is if there was a Pitbull attack the media always condems the dog for it's breed. But we never hear storys of abused Pitbulls turning on their owners. Our world should stop the killing of innocent dogs and people should only take a animal if they are willing to properly take care of it. Because alot of the times dogs are condemend to cages in shelters and euthanized because no one wants them. Those dogs should have a chance at life and not condemed to a cage. I love and own 2 Pitbulls they are good dogs. People should stop judging this breed of dog a German Shepherd can also maul a child if it was trained to do so. Pitbull lover for Life Also if i could own a different kind of breed i would say no thanks i will take my Pitbulls.

Any dog raised properly and socialized responsibly can be a great dog....while not my favorite breed (I prefer tall and graceful, think standard poodles and dobies) I do admire them for their incredible athleticism, loyalty, and great versatility. I applaud responsible pitbull owners and say "shame on you" to anyone who has the audacity to assign a stereotypical label to this breed or ANY breed. We as people, through breeding and subsequent raising, create the behavior issues that arise in dogs. Banning some breeds is not going to solve the "dog biting problem." I have seen pitbulls sleep next to newborn babies, the baby being the size of the pitbull's head, and that is nothing but angelic to me.
oh and ps to the person above talking about different dogs used for different jobs...while it may be true that pits were bred to fight dogs, they were NEVER bred to fight people, and therefore well-bred and well-socialized, they are entirely reliable around people. And by the way, I have a lab I found as a stray who is dominant toward other large male dogs...when I see a pitbull walking down the street I have to cross over because MY dog is the one who will cause trouble! So don't be so quick to assume the general charactertistics of a breed generalize to each and every dog of that breed. It is true pits may need more socialization with other dogs, and should be altered (so should every pet dog) but they certainly are capable of friendly interactions with other animals. The pitbull is no longer used primarily for dog fighting and has proven itself a loyal and loving family companion.
oh, and to the person below me...no one should hate you just because you would not get a breed of dog. There are many breeds of dog I would never get, because I am realistic about what I want in a dog, what i don't want, and what I can handle with a dog (how much it eats, the grooming, the exercise, etc) You don't have to like pitbulls, but you must respect that they are JUST A DOG, not some human-created monster...

i think they're lovely. big clowns. my staffordshire used to play with one at the park. they'd tear around for hours! its not the breed. its the owner that causes problems for dogs of this "type"
gemma z, you hit the nail right on the head. ppl generalize off incidents, here in the uk, the most common dog to bite is a lab. yet its the staffs, pit bulls, rotties and german shepards to name a few that get the baby killers reputation due to the media.
