If I'm going to be doing winter conditioning, could I bring my civilian 3-in-1 Starter winter coat to wear? The military-issued coat just isn't warm enough, the insulation is pretty thin. My civilian coat bought from Wal-Mart keeps me warmer and I rather wear that instead.

What if I put it on and I'm told to take it off, but never give in to the order? What happens next?

On duty, be it in training or once you have begun to work at your first post, you can only wear military approved uniforms...and this includes outerwear. You can not wear a civilian jacket over your uniform at all, at any time, period. The military jackets for winter are gortex and I have never heard of anyone saying they are not warm enough. In any case, you would not be allowed to even bring the coat to basic...it will be confiscated and returned to you once basic is complete. If you somehow managed to keep it and did wear it to drills, you would be ordered to remove it. Failure to do so would lead to disciplinary action...anything from extra laps, to extra duty to an Article 15 to being discharged from serving. Best learn now that the military is not the sort of place to try and disobey rules and orders.

You must be joking... I wish you were my Joe. I would smoke your bags so good you'd wish you could cool down a bit. I remember my 1SG making the whole company "roll left, roll right" in the muddy sleet on the ground in Germany for just one person shivering. And that was with the old cotton sweats for PT. Plus your desire to not follow orders? Do my military a favor and stay home. We have no need for wimps...

Sorry but what they give you is all you'll be needing. If you brought that sort of stuff and your 1st Sgt saw it on you.......well, it probably wouldn't be a pretty site. The military gear that you'll recieve is good stuff-I spent a couple of long tours in the Artic circle-it works! This isn't the 1940's stuff, the new gear is top shelf.

Your in the Army now, your not behind a plow. You do what your told, you wear what your issued. You'll never get rich on your pay. And try to thank God your not a marine! You try to wear that coat in front of your DI and your in a world of hurt rest of basic.

you will have to wear the army coat, you may wear a sweater under the army coat but you must look like others on the outside.

There is also a nice warm black fleece polartec jacket that goes under the gore-tex parka im wearing it right now in Korea. Its toasty! you also have polartec long underwear, sweaters, scarves.

the best warmer tho is to do some bends and thrusts! warm you up quick!

To make things simple; you breath when they tell you to breath, you jump when they tell you to jump, you blink when they tell you to blink, you sleep when they tell you to sleep, and you wear what they tell you to wear.
See how important it is? One little thing is treated just as important as the biggest thing because it's about 'attention to detail' and 'uniformity'. There's no such thing as differentiality in Boot Camp. That's the best way to put it bro. :)
