Well first they don't say the world will end.

Mayans split up time into many mini cycles and have one big cycle. Thats the date when the big cycle ends, but also corresponds to when the cycle begins. They assumed something significant will happen on that date, but they don't SAY anything more than that.

Basically the date corresponds to an astrological (astronomical??...i never know which of those 2 words to use) event. Anyways, one of the neat things is that for them to have calculated the date that accurately, they would have had to have known the earth wobbles on its axis, and there is no real evidence to show that they knew that.

Anyways, this date ish shows up various places in other cultures, but astrology was practiced practically everywhere.....and its the sky...its pretty much the same everywhere, so they get the same results.

All of taken into account + people trying to figure out when the end of the world is going to come decide thats what that date means.

If the Mayan calendar has any bearing that I can see or guess at, it will be the changing of the world. It will change in this manner, if it has anything to do with it:

12 I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, 13 and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as late figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. 14 The sky receded like a scroll, rolling up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.

15 Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and every free man hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. 16 They called to the mountains and the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17 For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?"
( Revelation 6 )

This means that the Earth will already be in the Great Tribulation. After those events take place, Chapter 7 says that the 144,000 will begin their work on the Earth.

12/21/12 is the last recorded date on the Mayan calendars. On that date the world as we know it is supposed to end, what that means is open to interpretation since it could mean we evolve to another plane of thought or we could be wiped off the face of the earth. I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens when the date comes.

It's just another day just like any other and the world will remain intact and people will be buzzing around without any problems. The simple truth is who knows whey the Maya chose to end the calender on that particular date it's not like it holds any signifigance if it did the secret is buried with the Mayan culture after the Spanish conquests.

My calendar ends on December 31st. I think what they usually do then is start another calendar. If there were any Mayans still around they would probably do the same.

It's 2012 right now due to errors in the Roman calendar.
