In operating systems, Kernel and Core are just different words that describe the same thing - like fat and oil. It is a program/process that comprises the main part of OS and serves other applications.

The term "kernel" is traditionally more accepted in Unix world, but "core" is also widely used in relation to all kinds of OSes.
