not really if you know what are you doing Linus Torvalds almost single-handedly created Linux from scratch.. Also, I would recommend you to read any Operating System books by Andrew S. Tanenbaum

The problem with Operating Systems is all the add ons for devices and interfaces to programs. If you strip out Linus, it is quite small, just can't do anything. Vista could easily be about half of existing size if the people that did the programs were true programmers not psuedocode writers. The are of programming is just about gone with what is out there today. Java, C, etc are languages that are translated to programs. When is the last time you saw a program in true code?

Just ask Microsoft - they are still trying to copy Apple ...badly.
Linux would be your best example.
