The binominal scientific name is generally written in full and follows the rules Dean explained.
A second way to write it:
When several species from the same genus are being listed or discussed in the same paper or report; in that case the genus is written in full when it is first used, but may then be abbreviated to an initial (and period) for successive species names; for example:
Urtica dioica, U. pillulifera, U.urens, U.........

The genus name comes first and the first letter is always capitalized. The species name comes second and it's never capitalized. But I think what you're asking is how to show that it is a binomial, and this is by either underlining the name or typing it in italics.
