I followed the recipe on the back of the Toll House chocolate chips bag, but my cookies have come out thick and cakey. Any suggestions as to how to get them chewy and a more stereotypically cookie texture? I would especially appreciate any alterations to my existing batter as I have about 4 dozens left in it and I would hate to waste all of it.

It will be difficult to "fix" the batter that you have on hand. You could try to cream more butter (not margarine or crisco) with somemore brown sugar and then stir that into your batter. In the future, you should make sure you are not using extra large eggs as they will make for a more cake like texture, pack the brown sugar in the cup to measure it before using and always sift your flour before you measure, do not pack it into the cup but gently spoon it in. Do not over mix but cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. You could try baking the remaining batter in a 9 x 13 pan as a bar cookie, it would probably be more to your liking than as individual cookies. Bake at 350 for about 20 mins.

Why Are My Cookies Cakey

Your recipe has too much flour to be chewy. Try reducing the flour by 1/2 cup and then make a test cookie. Add back flour one 1 Tbsp at a time until you get the desired texture. You can also cut out the regular sugar and use all brown.

I made the recipe on the back of the bag on Sat. - but measured my flour AFTER sifting it. My cookies came out way too flat. So I decided I need to measure the flour BEFORE sifting it the next time to get a little lift into the cookie.

My guess is your cookies have a little too much flour and mine had too little flour.

I don't know what you can do to the rest of your dough, because it would be very difficult to incorporate more brown sugar after the chips are already in it. But if you want to add anything, I would suggest additional brown sugar since that's what helps make them chewy and yummy.

Reduce flour and cooking time. Allow cookies to cool completely before tasting!!!
