The Inventor of the GUI was researchers at Xerox PARC. They designed the interface for the Xerox Alto Computer. It was developed in 1973.
As for the second question I believe it is a tie between Windows Vista, MacOS X, and Ubuntu Fiesty Fawn 7.10 , since they all feature a 3D interface and a fairly common in the market.

I can't answer your first question.

Second, the most advanced (in my opinion) would have to be Mac OS X Leopard but since everyone has a different opinion you can only answer the second question by experimenting with the GUI on all platforms. Some like the "aqua" interface of OS X while others prefer the blue interface of Windows XP.

apple computers invented the GUI and now it's a toss up between apple and windows on who has the most advanced
