I went to get a relatively large tattoo, the artist did it half way and told me that he couldn't finsh it all in one day and I should come back in 2-4 dyas time.

Is it normal for a tatto artist to do it over a few days? Doesn't it hurt a whole lot more to do it this way (now that my skin is tender)?

it is not normal to do part of a tattoo and then to go back a few days later. i have had a large tattoo done and had it worked on with two week periods in between so the skin could fully heal. it seems like the skin would be very tender and swollen if it had only been healing for a few days before it was tattooed again. tattooing is very traumatic to the skin and should be allowed to heal fully before being tattooed more. the ONLY times i have heard of larg tattoos being completed in a short amount of time is at conventions when the artist and customer live far apart and need to have it finished, still not comfortable for the person getting worked on.

Like everyone said, it's normal for multiple sittings - mine took a couple. But I also agree that if it's going to be going back over the same area, then 2-4 days is not enough time. It needs time to heal in between.
My husband is also working on a sleeve and they waited a month in between (not to mention it helps with the finances....)
One of my sittings for my tree was the outline and the other after that was the fill in. We waited at least a month in between.

Yeah it's extremly normal. I know tons of people that have full arm tattoos. They had to go back to the tattoo parlor over a span of 4 days. Large tattoos usually take around 28 hours. And no one wants to sit in a chair for 28 hours while some guy sticks a needle in their arm.

If a large tattoo takes multiple sittings there should be 4-6 weeks in between each sitting for proper healing. This is the only acceptable practice in my opinion.

your skin can only take so much before it starts resisting the tattoos and color. Its very normal for a artist to split up session over a couple days. It makes it easier for you and them. If your tattoo has alot of white like mine did then you have to split it up. White is a harder color for skin to except.
It doesnt make it that worse when you go back it might be like going and starting over again but in the long run its better for your skin and tattoo.

Perfectly normal, when my husband got his back piece he went for hour long sittings every 2 weeks (time to heal in between) took 8 sittings altogether.

i agree with tatt_brat, large tats take several sessions, but a few days between artwork is not enough for your body to heal from the first work.

(and that first work is already starting to heal, so the second work will hinder your body's healing process) -- sorry that sounds really wordy.

good luck
