So I have been going everywhere with it. I use a Pentax 1000 and a Canon 30d.

So I'm noticing most of the time the cameras give me the same settings if I point at the card or other stuff. Last night we had the most great sunset. The automatic shots were horrible, when I used the card the shoots looked really good. Do I use the card when the light is not "normal" and the cameras should get the rest right?

Am I making sence? Am I on the right track?

Yes you sound on to it.

Cameras on auto are good 95% of the time - this is like your other question.......so for the special shots when the light is "non-normal" use the card. Some say use auto all the time and thats fine if they don't want the special shoots.

Keep doing want your doing and after time you can throw the card away and you will know when the camera lies and beat it. Email me if you like and I will teach you how to use a grey card without using a grey card....

EDIT: Kristina maybe a new pic would be good - I like the one your using but gentlemen like Dr Sam get very excited and start saying funny things..........lol, nice work Dr, hope you have a sence of humour, you must with that loverly pic!

Yes you are on the right track! And I'll tell you how to take a shortcut to the station!

Notice the shade of grey on the card? It's sort of darkish grey.

You'll find this shade in any scene.

Zoom in on it -- use AE LOCK (sorry no can do on the K1000), recompose, and you'll get a grey-card accurate exposure without the grey card.

No kidding, it works...just do it.

Hope this helps.

You betcha.

An in-camera average meter is easily fooled.

Keep up the good work.

You are definitely on the right rack. I mean track.

I see Toni wants to tell you how he uses his palm in private.

Haha!!! It's a legitimate photographic technique!!!
