Men always want their towers taller, don't they?
Maybe the tourists should concentrate on driving the speed limit instead of looking for the sign. It is visible from several spots around LA, I have no idea why anybody would not be able to find it. The Hollywood sign has a web page and it tells you the best spots to see it. Doing research before a vacation helps prevent frustration when visiting an unfamiliar city.
The Hollywood sign used to say 'Hollywoodland' and it was originally put up to advertise the housing development that went in below Griffith Park. The sign was not built to be a permanent landmark.
Each letter is 50 feet tall (15.2m) and they are 1680 feet (512m) up the side of Mount Lee. So our unseen landmark is actually displayed on higher ground than any of the European ones you listed.
I agree with Paris Hilton, you should visit the Watts Towers after dark.

I live on Los Feliz Blvd and you can see the hollywood sign from my house. It is really a spectular historical landmark. I love it. Sometimes I go hiking through Griffith Park to get to it. IF you really want to see it. Take Franklin, to beachwood, to ledgewood, to Deronda dr. At the end of this road there is a gate, take the entrance to the left and you should see it up close. If you decided to take this route, please be considerate to the people living nearby and try to be quiet.
The hollywood sign was only meant to be up for a couple of years back in the early 1920s. Back then it was a sign that said "Hollywoodland" to promote the real estate in the hollywood hills. The sign was up there for so long that it became a landmark in 1940. By that time the city had dropped the "Land" and kept the rest. In 1977 Hugh Hefner organized a Save the hollywood sign campaign to restore it because it had been falling apart. It has been restored and it looks really nice now. The letters area about six feet shorter than the original sign. The original sign had lights on it, the new sign does not.
Los angeles has a 88 story Library Tower in downtown Los Angeles. It is the building that says US BANK. However it is private property and nobody is allowed to be in that buidling unless you are on their list. If you want a view of los angeles, try the Westin Bonaventure Hotel on 5th and flower st. It is 35 stories tall and has a rotating cocktail lounge.

Ed, get real. It's a sign, not a building.
The tallest building in Los Angeles is the U.S. Bank Tower (formerly Library Tower) in downtown Los Angeles at 633 West Fifth Street. With 73 floors, it stands at 1,018 feet, or 310m.
The Hollywood sign was originally built to say "Hollywoodland" almost 100 years ago, but the last four letters blew over in a storm. After that, it just became known as the Hollywood sign, and eventually became a landmark. Different purpose, different history. Get over it.
You seem to be the kind of tourist that wonders whey they let so many bears into Yosemite. Congratulations. You've won the DUH of the Day. DUH!
