I dont know that particular model of camera, but most all cameras are the same. There is usually a button with a jagged looking arrow on, or by it. Try pushing that and see if it cycles through various flash modes, perhaps Red Eye, Slow, Fast, Auto, and there should also be an OFF option. If you dont have that button, it may be built-in to the camera and is therefore Automatic. This means you wont be able to turn it off manually, you will have to have sufficient light to take your picture without the flash going, Hope that works for you.

Helper 555 is incorrect. There is no "A" mode on the G9, which tells me he's never looked at the camera. There is an "Av" mode which is aperture value and there's an "Auto" mode, labeled "Auto" not "A". Av mode happens to be what many pros would use, and his answer will do nothing but cause confusion.
In any case, directly next to the func set button on the back of the camera is a lightning bolt symbol. Pushing that while the camera is on and in camera (not playback) mode will toggle through your flash options, including flash off (display will show international "no" slash going through lighting bolt).

The G9 has a dedicated flash button on the back of the camera. It looks like a lightning bolt. Press it a number of times till you get to the flash symbol with the line through it.
You can turn the flash OFF in ALL modes. And you can turn it ON in all modes, except Auto.
I suggest you actually open up and READ your User Manual...all you need to know is well detailed.
Have a look on page 74..."Using the Flash".
Also, the chart on Pages 270-273..."Functions Available in Each Shooting Mode".

On your camera, flash is probably controlled via a button with a lightning bolt symbol. Make sure you camera is on. Make sure the display is showing. Push the lightning bolt button. Look at the display. Push the button until you see a lighting bolt in a circle with a slash through it. That means the flash is off. If you see a lightning bolt with a little eye, that means you have flash with red-eye reduction (a preflash pulse of flashes) enabled. And a regular lightning bolt just means flash is enabled.

If your shooting in (A) Automatic mode the camera controls everything including flash. Try shooting at least in (P) Program mode and toggle the flash icon button (lightning bolt) until no flash is selected.
You will learn nothing with your great G9 if you keep shoooting in (A) mode

Another question that could have been avoided by simply READING & STUDYING the Owner's Manual for the camera.
Does anybody ever do that?
