I hear so many questions (on here and real life) like, how do I get my four year old to stop throwing tantrums? How do I make my 9 year old brush their teeth? How do you get a 2 year old to sit in time out?
Now I have 6 kids, they're all very normal and certainly not perfect angels. I know how kids are, they have bad days, and they all misbehave.
But it seems like some parents have the most ridiculous time with their children, whatever happened to my house, my rules?
They're young children, MAKE them do it!

The question is clearly there. Why do they do it? Are they afraid, don't care?

I know what you mean. I agree with you, but everyone's parenting skills are different. What works for me won't work for other people. There are so many different opinions on parenting. All we can do is do what works for us and let other people live their lives.
There was this parenting style awhile back of 'let's be friends with our kids rather than parents'. I thought that was a load of crap. You're their parents, not their friends! I'm not saying that you can't be friends with your kids, but you need to be their parent first.
My children are taught respect right from the beginning. When Mommy says its time for bed, then its time for bed. Does he always go straight to sleep? Of course not, but he just knows not to get out of bed. Sometimes he sits and "reads" a book until he falls asleep, and that's fine with me. Nothing to get into a 'battle' over, you know?
They respect me, so they respect my rules. When they don't respect my rules, there are consequences. End of discussion.

I agree with you.
Many are afraid they will be reported for abuse, many are too busy working to raise their children, many are too tired from working to raise their children, many were not ready to become parents, many simply don't care, many think parenting is a negotiation. Pick one.
Gain and maintain control. Assert your authority. Earn their respect. It starts with letting your 3 yr old not brush their teeth, it ends with teenagers running rampant thru the streets with no care for themselves or anyone else.

You my dear are a grizzled veteran and have learned the hard lessons of parenting. Too many of these people are worried about "breaking their spirit" or "harming their ego" when you and I know our job is to raise them to be law abiding citizens that you hopefully can someday send to college.
I just wish I could get my wife to learn some of the lessons that I have learned before our daughter is a teen, otherwise I will be driven to strong drink with two angery women in my house that are cycling.

They have no idea how to take control, and especially how to be consistent with their kids.. it takes WORK to be consistent and how many people do you know these days who have any energy?
I'm 50 and partially disabled... and believe it or not, i can work circles around most people in their 20's.. it amazes me!!

Parents have to asseert authority and surrendering any battle makes them appear both weak and vunerable and power is undermined

i totally agree with you "its your house your rules make them do it". my brother and sister let ther kids walk all over them and show them no respect. my brother comes close to what i would class as child abuse to get his kids to listen to him and they dont pay any attention to him. if i tell my daughter something i make her do it and if she does something naughty and i tell her off i dont sook her after she starts crying you need to show your kids who is boss it may seem mean but they will respect you for it when you are older.
