Since they're better at everything, how come none of them are in the World Book of Guiness Records or news stations are not camped out at their place hounding them for interviews??

Save your stories for someone who will appreciate them, not someone who is so insecure they have to 'one up' them. I smile when I'm smiled at and speak when I'm spoken to. I try not to make any fast movements or draw attention to myself. Like a pack of wild dogs after a rabbit, they only seem to attack if I move. We keep the visit under 2 hours. Anymore then that and hubby knows I'll blow a gasket.
With that said, I am NOT doing the inlaw holiday thing this year. I've put my time in and told hubby I am retired! I spent every holiday for 17 years having them all monopolized by my inlaws and missing my own family. I'm not willing to do that anymore for people who don't treat me well.
As far as remarriage, well my BIL and MIL have both been married 4 times now! I didn't even bother going to the last receptions. After the second time they should just run off to marry.
Kill them with kindness and if they get too unbearable then don't take their crap and leave.
Best of luck!

People like that are called one-uppers. Everything you ever do or say they are always going to either have it worse or done something better or have it better. There really is nothing you can say or do that will ever stop that. The best thing you can do is ignore it and don't get involved in conversation that would lead them to do the one up on you. Good luck. I know "exactly" how you feel on this. Some of my own family members are like this.

They can't bother you unless you are competitive as well. Being as you ARE competitive - then the only way you won't be bothered is to beat them.
