Yes, Essenese mean 'Out Siders' in Hebrew. They are suspected to have come from Egypt and India. The esoteric and mystic practices were Indian in origin which were also prevailing in practice in Egypt in those days.

The Essenes were 'racial' Jews-descendents of Abraham-who chose to go outside the Jewish religion. They looked for the coming Messiah, and expected The Warrior King appearance to overthrow Rome...just as most Jews did. However, they also rejected the idea of a resurrection-of the body which died-and adopted a belief in reincarnation...the return of an old spirit in a new body. That is why they chose the fish as a symbol; because fish had always symbolized reincarnation. They differed from traditional Judaiism in other ways as well...which is why traditional Jews considered them 'outsiders', and why they considered themselves outsiders. They did not "come to" Israel. They "went from" Israel, and set up their own hippy commune like settlements in the deserts. They were NOT Christians, as they rejected Christ when He appeared, and fought against Christians later.

The ones opposed to the Hellenizers during the Maccabean revolt period were Assideans, or, in Hebrew, Hasidim, which means "pious ones". After the Maccabean revolt succeeded, the group of Assideans split into two smaller groups, the smaller of the two called Essenes, which is of unknown derivation, but can be traced back to a Hebrew root word meaning "healers". The larger of the two groups were the Pharisees.

The Essenes were Jews, They made up a group of people who held a different view and opinion than other Jews. During ancient times there was much conflict of "Opinion" so to speak inside the religion and the culture itself. They were found in many cities in many different towns...You could almost compare them in a way to a denomination of Judaism.

More literally, the Essenes were insiders as far as God is concerned, but outsiders as far as the temple priests were concerned !!!
That doesn't say much for some of the temple priests at that time does it !!! Since they were the ones who railroaded Him !!! Remember that the people loved Jesus and that as far as the priests were concerned jesus was upsetting the pushcarts at the temple in more ways than one !!!
