Earlier tonight I experienced a very strange, sudden wave of confusion which was followed by a ringing in my ears. I've also noticed that my lip is somewhat bitten . I'm pretty sure I was conscious the whole time and I am 100% sure I took my meds.

This is not my usual 'aura' (feeling I get before a seizure) and I've had 4 tonic-clonic / grand mal seizures starting last August.

Also, if I experience my 'aura' and I don't have a gran mal, does it mean I had a petit mal or just what does it mean?

Any advice is GREATLY apreciated. Thanks.

Petit mal / absence seizures are just brief lapses in consciousness that last a few seconds. They normally don't have sensory effects. The ones with an aura feeling are definitely simple partial seizures. They can last from a couple seconds to a couple minutes and can cause confusion, disorientation, sensory stimulation (odd sights, sounds, etc) and other such things, which make me, think the more recent one could be simple partial seizures too. In some cases (like mine) they can lead into other seizures.

It is possible it was just a different kind of simple partial seizure; maybe it happened in a different area of the brain. It could also be that it was a complex partial seizure. They cause loss of consciousness, but people tend to move around or do repetitive motions; biting of lips may be an example. It can also be difficult for people to realize they had a complex partial seizure if they've never had one before. They may simply feel like déjà vu or like you mind was wandering.

It is not uncommon for epileptics to have more that one type of seizure. I sometimes just have simple partial seizures (the aura thing) and sometime they happen seconds before I have a complex partial seizure. (It's just long enough for me to think, "Damn, this means I'm going to have a seizure.") I have also had grand mal seizures in my sleep at least three or four times though.

Finally, how long have you been on Keppra? I'm taking it right now. If you are just starting it (or any anti-seizure medication) it can take awhile to find the right combination and amount that will work for you. I don't know how many times my prescription was changed before it ended up where it is now. It seems to be working though; it's been almost two years since my last seizure.

your doctor will be able to diagnose a seizure after you have lots of tests -unless 911 is called next time you are actively seizing.
