I think that the answer of "nas" is really illustrative for the problem. What he is saying is basically: "Yes, I support freedom of speech, but you are not allowed to say something that I don't like". I am sorry, nas, but it doesn't work that way. We don't need freedom of speech to say things that are not offensive to anyone in the world. We explicitely need freedom of speech to protect our right to say things that other people may find offensive. It is not up to you (or anyone else) to determine what I can say, however disrespectful it may sound in your ears.

I don't think all Muslims in the Middle East know how important freedom of speech is to us. It's not a right that is given to them; they would have no idea how it feels to use that right. And not every Muslim uses violence; it's just a few Islamist extremists.
And by the way, I'm an atheist. So...I guess I present a sort of unbiased opinion.

First of all I have to say that many muslims are westerners, so it is pretty messed up to just single them out like that. Freedom of speech is a right, but it is not a right for someone to publish something that they know will upset many people, otherwise why is flag burning illegal, it should technically be considered freedom of expression.

Freedom of speech is not a law. It is a freedom.
Whether or not it is the most important of the freedoms could be debated.
Freedom of speech does not say anything about how important your opinion is, just that you have the right to express it.

evaluate this, in case you will. approximately 1500 years after the commencing place of Christianity, the Christian international (in Europe, in any case) went berserk. Christians fought between ourselves like demented ravenous wolverines approximately stuff like no remember if there might desire to be pictures of Jesus displayed in church homes. Christians burned different Christians alive for ingesting sausages for the duration of Lent, and drowned different Christians for claiming that folk who have been baptized as little ones ought to be baptized back as adults. And as for how Christians dealt with Jews and Muslims in that century? Worse. you have mentioned as them (us) a collection of humorless fools. that's now approximately 1500 years after the founding of Islam. A scurrilous caricature by potential of a few Danish guy has the flexibility to hearth up severe indignation which finally ends up in bloodshed, that's a shame. yet permit's basically say Christians have been with the aid of this too.

Do they care ? No.
We in the west, the liberals of the world, must understand that many other nations and beliefs dont give a rats *ss about what we think. Or why we think.
Reason and common sense is not part of their equation.
We must accept that the rest of the world does not reason the way we do.

The Muslims go postal over cartoons of Mohammed, saying that it "insults their religion", but cartoons like the ones in this link are common on a daily basis in GOVERNMENT controlled papers throughout the Arab and Muslim world:

no they don't. freedom of speech and of the press is against Islam and Violence is the only solution to any problem. Islam is a very primitive lifestyle(it's not really a religion)

we believe in the freedom of speech.. but more importantly we believe that no one should have the right to disrespect anyones religion.. i've seen comics, movies, cartoons, stand up comedies mocking Jesus and God.. all for a few cheap laughs.. no if y'all dont take offense to the disrespect of your religion, thats your decision.. but dont judge us for caring about keeping the image of Allah or our beloved prophet Muhammed (peace be upon Him) pure
it may seem like much to you.. but to us muslims RESPECT plays a big part.. we respect all those worthy of respect and we demand respect
