The scimitar is a one-edged sword in use in the Middle East long before the Roman empire came along. The double-edged sword was an improvement in terms of warfare, but required a different fighting style. It could kill on the up stroke and on the down. It also could stab. The scimitar could only slash.

Unless you grab that sword in the proper spot, you most certainly will get cut.
Or as in the case of the tongue being a double edge sword... It means if you don't choose your words carefully you and someone else will get hurt.

The expression of Spirit in mind through the human tongue. Thoughts are things. Words are powerful. They may heal as a hot sword touched to a wound to staunch a flow of spirit or blood. Words may also be used as a spirit sword to cut away error out of the ideation others by way of broad flat swings of verbal expression as directed by spirit through mind.
Figuratively speaking.
