I mean a good quality ring without the outrageous price normally attached to it. I don't want a cheap junk ring, just a nice ring for the best price.

Take the time a educate yourself on a diamond. Diamonds are rated by clarity and color, the higher these number the pricier the diamond. I would say for a diamond that is 1.5ct or more you would want higher numbers. A smaller diamond, the clarity and color rating would not matter because the diamond is so small.
As far a where to buy it at? You don't buy a diamond over the Internet. You really need to look at a diamond closely for its visible flaws.
Stay away from department store jewelry, such a walmat, jcp and others. They are all crap.
As far a jewelry stores? Even they will try and sell you some crappy diamond at some outrages price. My suggestion is just look around and compare prices.

As for a store I would recommend?
I bought my wife's diamond at http://www.robbinsbros.com/
When we went into the store we told them to size we wanted and its clarity, they brought the stones to us. The stone was then put into a setting we wanted. Overall the prices were good and I was happy with the diamond quality.

I've bought diamonds from an online diamond house called hadardiamonds.com - very happy. From all of the searching online, this was the best value and price. The ring setting was only $350, and it looks like a Tiffany ring with the white diamond which I was able to buy for $2,000 less than if I had purchased from a mall.

There are rings at every price point. What you think is "nice" and a "reasonable" price is subjective. Try one of the large chains...be sure you get a value appraisal on the ring. If you want to check that you got what you paid for, take the ring to another jeweler for an independent appraisal. If it doesn't come in at a similar value return it to the seller.

Whiteflash.com and Also check out Pricescope.com
Just be careful of the TW or Total Weight ploy. They often have inclusions in the rings which are not worth what they charge. Also read up on Quality. SI 1 is pretty good. I2 is also good.
Big chains dont really pay attention to the stones they put in. I have noticed this on my rings. Also they dont do custom work and if you get it done then the "warranty" is out the window.

I almost forgot.. CONGRATS on finding the ONE

Find a local jeweler in your area. Personally, I think that's your best bet.

I don't like those mall places (like Kay's) It's a chain. They aren't out to help you get the "perfect" gift. They are out to make a sale. If it's not you, then it's the next person.

I feel like local owned (and often family operated) places have much better quality and more personalized service. Those type of places get their business from word of mouth. So, you can often make negotiations or deals about prices or free services (like sizing or cleanings) If you come in and want to buy, they are going to try to make you happy while you do it. They know you could have easily gone to Kay's.

At those other places, it's just a chain. As long as you buy, that's all they care about.

Just make sure you are well educated in the 4 C's and generally know what you want to buy and spend.

Also, try bring a friend (or maybe your dad) along. Make sure it's someone who's been in this position before and knows what to look for and do.

This may sound really pathetic....but we got my ring from a pawn shop. We were just in there looking at a table saw that we saw in the window and I went to look at the jewelry and there was a really awesome vintage ring--2 carat in a platinum filigree setting. The stone was a European Cut which is from the 1800s. I get compliments on it all the time. I feel lucky to have it. Some people might find it strange but I love love love my ring and we only paid $600.00 for it!

My fiancee got my ring at Zales, and it was a NIGHTMARE. They were lying, slimy A*****s. They sold him a beautiful ring, and i noticed after several days of wearing it that the middle stone had a large CRACK in it! We brought it back extremely upset, and the woman was annoyed and rude, as if it weren't HER problem. She replaced it AGAIN with a similar ring, and we had it appraised this time to make sure there was nothing wrong- it appraised for 1000 less than the original expected value! When we called her to complain, she insisted that since we bought it on sale, the ring didn't have to appraise for the original value- only the sale value. I told her that if she TOLD us we were getting a 3,600 ring, and had a tag on it stating this was the value, then only guaranteeing it to appraise for the sale price was false advertising. She was a rude, mean, woman. NEVER ZALES AGAIN!!!

Have a local jeweler design your ring or purchase one from a local shop and not a retail jewelry shop. We had ours made from a jewels & gems class at a University. We only paid for the materials...diamonds and metal. The work was free since it was done in class. We gave them a "donation" for the beautiful pieces they created. We used a 2 carat diamond and white gold. Good Luck!

My Fiancee got my ring at Zales, and it is white gold and a little over a half carat. ( the way it is set, it looks alot bigger) The diamonds are very good quality and he got an amazing deal on it. I would check them out. However, I wouldn't check out the website, because sometimes you can get a better deal in the store.

Congrats!!!
