Detectives are promoted from the patrol division. You need to become good at your patrol job first to be eligible for promotion to detective.

The actual requirements will be up to each individual department, but they will likely consider most, or all, of the following: past job evaluations, job interest, work ethic, seniority, a written test and an oral interview board.

The minimum age to get hired on patrol will also vary. Some require 18, others require 21 years.

THE HARDY BOY'S DID WHAT YOU SLUTHS ARE DOING NOW.
THE WORD DETECTIVE IS FROM WITHIN A DEPARTMENT.
USUALLY YOU WILL BE SELECTED TO BE A DETECTIVE BASED UPON YOUR SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE. SOMETIMES A TEST AND A ROSTER ARE MADE UP TO FILL UPCOMING VACANCIES.
SO 21 TO JOIN THE FORCE IN MOST STATES AND 3 YEARS=24 OR 25 AT YOUNGEST.
I WAS 26 WHEN I MADE DETECTIVE IN 1973. 4 YEARS PATROL, 3 YEARS MILIRTARY POLICE, AA DEGREE IN L/E. KEEP DREAMING I DID.

You get a college degree. Then you get hired as a patrolman for a police department. After 5 years you take a test, if you pass you become a detective.

(At least this is how it is done where I live).
