I think I have every shape & size in my pantry. You might want to change up your sauce from time to time. I often like mine 'bald' just a little olive oil with a squeeze of lemon & some parmesan cheese. However, when I make chicken, I will mash a couple of potatoes in the gravy, sometimes I add some peas or asparagus & finish cooking the pasta in the gravy and I do this with turkey as well. Same thing with a beef stew or ground beef & sausage stew. Then again, we like roasted or sauteed vegetables & pasta of choice or sometimes sauteed seafood i.e. shrimp, mussels, scallops. Sometimes with black olives & artichokes. We all love pasta but not every time with a tomato sauce or cream sauce. Go through a lot of cheese but try to stick to romano or parmesan to cut down on the fat content. Sometimes, though, just can't resist mozzarella melting through the hot pasta with chili peppers.

honestly it depends.... Certain shapes lend themselves to different sauces.
for instance, a smooth sauce works great with straight pasta, like linguine, spaghetti etc...
if you are using a chunkier sauce - like a pasta primavera - then you want to use a shape that will "catch" the chunks - so like the medium size shells or the orchechetta or whatever.
For baking pasta I choose a shape that will hold up well, like a rigatoni...
In all honesty, you can pick and choose what you like... there are general reasons why they offer so many shapes but it is what you like.
for me, I like whole wheat pasta - Barilla makes a nice one - and I like to keep the traditional spaghetti shape, orchetta - cause I like the shape and the medium size shells.
to drop some in some soup how about trying orzo?

Egg noodles are better for Stroganoff, or tuna noodle casseroles. Honeycomb and elbow make great goulash recipes. Spirals, shells, honeycombs, and Elbow are great for Mac and cheese. Linguini and Angel Hair are great for Marinara sauces.

I prefer shells or spaghetti . the first is a little heavier but both are my choices with red sauce or white.
