Easy to tell. Find out how many people have built them and how well they work. If it works, it's not a hoax.

The electric car appears to not be a hoax. http://www.evdl.org/

The compressed air car, how will that be better than the compressed hydrogen car? We get to burn the hydrogen

Ultracaps, anybody got a vendor part number for them?

Hydrogen fuel cells. So we're taking LOTS of electricity to separate water into hydrogen and oxygen. Putting the hydrogen in a super compressed tank that can't hold very much. Uh huh. Then we're using the hydrogen in a fuel cell to turn it "back" into electricity.

Ummm... wait... why not just charge a battery directly? It would be way more efficient. The battery can hold just as much. And it can be charged, gosh, anywhere there's power. And it exists today. Hey! And we know how to hang an extra gas engine on it in case we outrange our batteries. Where do you refill a hydrogen car?

Electric car, it is possible to store more energy per volume in batteries than in air cylinders. This will mean the cars can travel further without refuelling, so will be a better competitor with petrol cars.

Compressed air is one of the most inefficent energy storage methods. At least with a coal fired plant you can achieve a 35-40% efficiency rating.
