This is my question, because no one, and I mean no one, loves this movie more than I do. I first saw this movie when I was 6 years old, in 1972 when it first premiered. I have literally watched this movie 2 thousand times since then. When I saw the movie, for the first time, I went with my mother, my paternal grandfather, and my maternal grandparents. There are four things, to this day that stick out in my mind: 1) The first scene how it starts out dark and Buona Serra is talking to Marlon Brando. 2) When Luca Brasi's hand is stabbed on the bar top. 3) When Sonny is shot at the toll booth. 4) The biggest thing that sticks out in my mind, the reaction of my grandparents after the movie. They being from Italy, they were highly insulted. It's a movie that Italians, from their generation hated but Italian Americans loved. The house they used in the movie, is an actual house my grandfather happened to build and he hated they used a house he built in that movie. Having said all that, I see nothing wrong with your son seeing the movie, as long as he understands it's a movie and not reality. The movie is conciderred, by many movie critics, to be the greatest movie ever made, concidering how many times I have watched it, it's obviously mine. There is not one curse word in the movie, the violence is very tame by today's standards and there is intentionally no mention of the words; Mafia, La Cosa Notra, or any other term for Italian organized crime (I'm speaking about The Godfather not the Godfather II). Why have people said the movie has "salty language" there is NOT one curse word in the entire movie, in any version of the movie. I have every version of the movie ever released and I have even seen the un-edited un released version, of the movie, my neighbor was in the movie and he had a copy that's how I saw that version. And there are NO curses, 1 brief topless scene, that lasts 2 seconds, and it's not at all vulgar in anyway.

I watched it with my sisters and girlfriends when I was much, much younger than him. I liked films, particularly dramas. Since our mothers were single and working they didn't have much control over what we watched.
If your son is interested in films, I would not stop him at the age of 14. (He might have a creative side for writing or movie making) If he wants to watch it to get off on the violence then I would steer him in a different direction, say Scarface, perhaps. Just kidding.
As a child, I wouldn't watch something if I felt it wasn't appropriate. I remember Saturday Night Fever when I was 11 and I chose not to watch, it was too adult for me.
I can't say any movie left an impression on me other than remembering some scenes or funny lines. Although, if I had to come up with something, I'd say the wholesome movies from the 1940's sadly gave me fairytale wishes.

14 is old enough to watch the God Father. However, I'm pretty protective, so I wouldn't suggest it just because it does have violence. But if he wanted to see it, by all means I would let him. It's a very intelligent film.

Depends on his maturity level. I watched movies like "The Godfather" when I was that age and was fine with it. That said, other children that age might not have the maturity to handle such a subject. You know your kid better than we do. Does he understand completely the difference between a movie and real life? Does he understand the role of context in establishing or illustrating a violent topic? Is the movie going to contradict your mode of raising your child? Answer these questions for the individual child in question, and you'll know what to do.

Yes. I say any child 10 and over can see it. I have a 12 year old and she recently saw it, she was fine.
You see in my opinion it doesn't matter the rating of the movie, it just matters about the type it is.

Yes. I don't see a problem, with that. It is an old movie, and it is mild in comparison to some of the newer movies.
