Did you try it with flathead screws, and precut holes in the tin slightly smaller than the diameter of the screw heads?

If the existing ceiling is painted smooth, you can rough sand the area where the tin panels will be applied and, with the appropriate adhesive, glue them in place.

You can also use Locktite to stick them up with a fast grab and then use tiny upholstery tacks which really aren't securing the tiles, they are just for looks and your tin will stay secure and look vintage.
