I've never owned one, but I've always wanted one. The research I did stated that they are very good around children and are protective.

If your son is mildly allergic to dogs, I would suggest trying to find a more hypoallergenic dog. Becuase you know your son is going to want to love on the dog a lot. My cousin has been HIGHLY allergic to dogs since he was small and he finally found out that there are "hypoallergenic" breeds of dogs. Which is basically ones who do not produce a lot of dander. He got a pomeranian and has had no problems at all-all because it has a differnet kind of coat. Here is an exerpt i got: Good luck. I know most of these breeds are small dogs but you can get the standard sizes as well that are comparable size to the lab and the weimeriner.
What does "hypoallergenic" really mean?
To be hypoallergenic is to have a decreased tendency to cause allergies. Hypo means less, not none. Hypoallergenic dog breeds will still produce allergens, but because of their coat type, will typically produce less than others. People with severe allergies and asthma will still be affected by a hypoallergenic dog.
There is no such thing as a non-allergenic dog.
What coat-type makes the difference?
There are two coat types that produce a lesser amount of allergens: single-coated dogs, who do not have a thick undercoat, and hairless dogs. However even hairless dogs can produce enough dander to to affect a highly allergic person.

Weimeraners are beautiful dogs. They're very energetic and need a nice big yard to run off some of that energy. If you live in an apartment, condo, or townhome a Weim isn't the dog for you guys. They love interaction and attention from their people. Most are great with kids as long as the kids know how to behave with an animal. Weims have very short hair and shouldn't aggravate your son's allergies as long as you keep you dog bathed regularly. ;)

My sister is a vet tech and my friends recently got a Weimeraner and they have two kids. My sister said in the very beginning that was the wrong dog choice for them, this breed is typically high energy and pretty hard to train, similiar to a Dalmation. They require a lot of time and effort that someone with two kids probably wouldn't have time to give two puppies. My friend really, really had problems with their dog, it was patient with the kids but basically all it did was run around the house with them, they had the worst time trying to potty train it or train it to do anything else, they ended up giving it to a single friend of thiers.
Just information from my personal experience, someone else might have better insight.

Boxers have longer hair than Weimeraners. They are both dogs that need plenty of room to play and exercise.A friend of mine had a weimeraner and it was very protective over the family ,that is good but he did bite a few people that were visiting the family .maybe they got a little rowdy and the dog was just thinking he was protecting the kids.

It all depends how old your kids are for a family with small children. I would pick a small dog and get him or her as a puppy. I would consider a Bichion Frise, French Bulldog, Miniature Pinscher or a Chihuahua. If your kids are older and you have a lot of time and love to devote to a Weimeraner puppy. I would say go for it. Because animals teach children how to become more responsible and confident.

Every weimeraner I have known was very good with kids. Your son's allergy would be a reason for concern about any dog. You might want to consult with his doctor about the best way to deal with it.

They're great with kids, especially high energy kids (Weimaraners are high energy, so kids with the same energy level would be ideal). They're overall ''happy go lucky'' dogs, just like the Boxer.
The best thing to do, is bring your son with you when you go and meet a Weimaraner. See if your son has an allergic reaction to the breed, before bringing one home. Same goes with the Boxer, if you decide on that breed.

Perfect for a family dog. As far as allergies go.....any animal you get, plan to bathe often (once a week to start). It's the natural oils the animal(s) give off that can be bathed out with a good pet shampoo that won't harm the skin or coat for the pet as well as temporarily comfort the person with allergies.
