Both red wine and white wine can very considerably in alcohol content. The alcohol content is decided by how ripe the grapes were when picked and what the winemaker decides.
By law, in every country I know of, bottles of wine must have the alcohol content shown on the label, described as a percentage.
So look on your bottle of Chardonnay for the %abv (alcohol by volume), and the next time you have a red wine look for the %abv of that.
Different brands of Chardonnay will have different %abv, and different vintages of the same brand may have different %abv.
One cannot generalise whether red or white wine have higher %abv. Some reds have lower %abv than some whites, and vice versa.
Look on the label -- the info is there.
(If you are buying a glass of wine in a bar or restaurant, ask to look at the label or ask the pourer what the %abv is.
It is important to know the %abv if you're worried about getting tipsy. A wine of 15%abv is considerably stronger than one of 10%abv

Generally yes
All wine is fairly close in alcohol content with the exception of fortified wines like port or sherry

red has more alcohol content....12.5 to 14.5 % ;white has 8 to 12%;but red wines are fermented dry[ no sugar] where as white can have a significant amount,sugar is what pulls the alcohol through your system

in general white wines are typically lower in alcohol ranging anywhere from 7.5% - as high as 14.5 or 15.0%. Reds can go as low as 11.5% - as high as 17.0% or more.
so yes, some red and white can have the same alcohol content. one of my wine clients in sonoma does all the their wine at 13.5%
