You might want to take lessons before. Don't you think you will be under enough pressure from just the normal stuff at the police academy?

Swimming would be part of the police academy depending on the police agency i.e. Marine Patrol, or Parks and Wildlife Police. These type of police agencies are around water so swimming would be a need. Most police department don't have a need for a swimming curriculum unless they geographically operate in a coastal city. And then most police department only determine your level of swimming as non-swimmer, intermediate swimmer, and swimmer because of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Now ADA may not cover the Marine Patrol or Wildlife Police type jobs because swimming may be a specific job function.

My advice would be to join a YMCA and learn to swim before. I dont think they (police academy) would take the time to teach a cadet to swim.

You have to swim to be a police officer? A lifeguard I can see... but a police officer?

Anyhoo, if it's that important to you take a class before you go into the academy. Check the YMCA or your local parks and recs centers.

No, they don't prepare you to swim. they could require swimming and/or lifeguard training once you're a member of a marine patrol, yet not for recruit training. not sure what you propose with the help of "take care of guidelines". that is unquestionably something you may desire to have the skill to do, yet i'm not sure it may study.

They are going to teach you, its crucial that you know how to swim, for example, you see a little boy drowning, and if you don't know how to swim, then the boy could die. But it would help if you take classes before, but they will teach you.

I know of no police dept, where being able to swim is a prerequisite for becoming a police officer.

I imagine they do not teach you. You can take swimming lessons at your local community college, or your local rec center.
