He didn't really know himself. He showed interest in Buddhism, and this other religion that claimed that every day you go through heaven and hell. When he was a teenager he became a christian for a while, but then abandoned it and claimed to be satanist and to hate god. He also claimed to be an atheist as well. I guess he would be classified as "agnostic" .
That lyric is metaphorical. It doesn't actually mean that he had "found god".

I believe he was a Buddhist.
Edit: This post has received a lot of sick and twisted answers in regards to people with disabilities. Why people feel it is appropriate to rip apart persons with disabilities is beyond me. Anyway the lyrics you mention, haven't heard the song in a while, most likely relate to his struggle his disability. Lithium Carbonate is a mood stabilizer. The lyrics, like most lyrics are poetic and metaphorical.

He always seemed confused about religion. I wouldn't be surprised if he never picked one. Doesn't make him an atheist, he just didn't know.

At the very least he was agnostic, but more probably didn't believe in any gods.....heart shaped box depicts a mock crucifixion, so he certainly didn't believe in christianity.

i seriously know this. He didn't claim a certain religion and at any given time was embracing more than one, he was fond of Buddhism, referred to god as a woman, and was quoted as saying god or gods from moment to moment he also claimed he didn't believe in god and that he was a satanist.. he was raised sort of half a$$ed Christian. Kurt was a very confused man, and he did what confused people do.
EDIT: in the song you refer to it was meant to mock religious people like born-again Christians

Kurt got caught up with the drug community of Aberdeen and started heroin, an addiction he would never defeat. Many blame his death on this horrendous drug.
Heroin was God to Kurt, who often lived
under a bridge. He was very messed up!
The groundbreaking “grunge band” Nirvana,
which disbanded eight years ago when front
man Kurt Cobain took his own life.
In recent months, the group resurrected itself
and Cobain’s voice with a greatest hits
album and a new single, “You Know You’re
Right,” which holds the No. 1 spot on the
Billboard’s Modern Rock hit list!
He had a friend who was into Christian Science, but I don't think he was. One of his songs mocked "born again" Christians, and he praised Budda, but he really had no faith at all.
A founding member of the Bakersfield multi-platinum band Korn is leaving the group to focus on his religious beliefs.
"Korn has parted ways with guitarist Brian 'Head' Welch, who has chosen Jesus Christ as his savior, and will be dedicating his musical pursuits to that end," read a statement posted this week on the band's Web site.
Welch told The Bakersfield Californian that his decision to leave Korn might be surprising to some.
"My old friend called today and said he was called up by another friend of mine who said, 'Who brainwashed Brian?'" Welch quipped. "Man, you guys don't even know ... A lot of people think I'm crazy. I don't care."
Welch said he was becoming increasingly disenchanted with himself as a Korn band member, producing heavy metal music that invoked dark and morbid images.
Brian Welch left Korn for his religious beliefs. WOW, that's mind blowing
