I agree with the other posters, why isn't the Mazda 3 on your list? However since a new Mazda 3 is coming in a year, you might want to go used with that or the Elantra. I definitely wouldn't buy the Lancer, price is not worth all those negatives. Sentra isn't quite as good as the Civic and for the same money, so no. Focus is okay, but I'm not sure about Ford. The Elantra and Civic are the best on your list, if you think you'll be selling your car within 3 years I'd go with the Civic due to the better resale, otherwise I'd save $2K and go with the pretty much equal Elantra.

While I am a big fan of Hyundai, I would urge you to look at a Certified Pre-owned Mazda 3. My younger brother is looking for a new car and I've been playing wingman for him thru several scouting trips and i was most impressed with the 3 after looking at: Ford Focus & Fusion, Saturn Aura, Nissan Sentra, & Honda Civic.
If resale value is a concern (way to llok to the future!) you won't incur the initial drop off in value if you're buying certified.
The Mazda's got great looks, around 35 mpg highway, great space, loads of standard features, and still manages to have great punch. I've been finding here in SoCal for about $15k with an extended warranty out to 10 years/100k miles.

Out of your list I think the Civic would be the best choice followed by the Elantra.

If you don't want to take the depreciation of an Elantra then get a used one.

I don't understand what you mean by the base Civic isn't as good. Besides not having any bells and whistles it's basically the same care as the LX and EX.

BTW, the Fusion is a midsize car. May I also suggest the Corolla.

IF YOU WANT SOMETHING THAT WILL LAST FOR A VERY LONG TIME AND AT THE SAME TIME BE ON THE ROAD MORE THAN IN THE REPAIR SHOP GO WITH THE HONDA.

IT IS THE BEST BY FAR IN BEING RELIABLE AND HOLDS THE BEST RESALE VALUE.

It's only between the Civic and the Mazda 3(shame on you for leaving this off). Everything else is either ugly(Focus, Sentra), a POS(Elantra), or potentially unreliable(Lancer). I would HIGHLY and I say HIGHLY recommend AGAINST buying a new entry level car. First of all you can get the same car for MUCH less by getting one a year or two old. Or you can get a much better car by going on the general used car market.

Around $16K you can look at something like a used Lexus GS300. It will be a MUCH MUCH better car than any of those. If you want something more "plain" you can look at 03-04 Accords and stuff like that. Buying new is stupid especially for entry level cars.

I love the new redesigned 2008 Ford Focus. It gets up to 35 mpg, has a quieter ride than previous models, has optional leather seats, and two things the others don't have: a voice activated entertainment system called the Ford Sync, and ambient lighting. Learn about both of them here, and they will bet you over the others for sure: http://www.fordvehicles.com/cars/focus/

Oh and here are the advantages the Focus has over the others: http://www.fordvehicles.com/cars/focus/compare/fordadvantages/?vehicles=22701|22244|22783

a million. Reliability is predicated on the owner, no longer the motor vehicle. in case you look after a motor vehicle, it lasts. in case you do no longer, it won't. however the motor vehicle won't be able to do something on it somewhat is very own to be solid. So it somewhat is pointless to seek for a motor vehicle with "reliability". so a techniques as appropriate 4 door? Mid ninety's Honda Civic. 4 doors, and 30-40 miles to the gallon. low value, low upkeep, low insurance. not one of the autos you suggested even come close.
