Hi, I'm taking care of a friends dog this Christmas. I've taken care of him many many times before but maybe it's cause I'm used to my new puppy that when I went to visit him today I was so shocked at his size that I almost had a heart attack! Well I'm exaggerating but still. He never gets enough exercise and get fed a lot of human food. He's part corgi but he looks mostly like a corgi. He is definitly obese, so when I doggy-sit him I must slim him down! Well I do know the basics, exercise and no table scrap etc. but is there anyone who's experienced or is a professional at dieting? Anything I should watch out for?

These are the things your friend needs to do.
First talk with your vet about this.
Second put him on a weight management diet dog food.
Third more exercise is needed
Forth no more people food
You however can do none of these things except the exercise as he isn't your dog. You really need to talk to your friend about this issue.

I have heard that green beans will make a dog lose weight. Some diabetic dogs have been prescribed green beans to keep their weight down. The beans should be mixed with the dry food. For a corgi I would think 1/4 a can once a day would be enough. Also there are many dog foods that are low calorie. I would check with the dogs owner before doing anything first.

Diabetes is usually treated through a combination of diet (low sugar), exercise and medications/insulin. Read here https://tr.im/iaHqZ
Milder cases can be controlled with just diet an/or exercise while more severe cases require meds or insulin as well.

Fast the dog for 24 hours, then ration 3/4 of the appropriate portion of food.
Take it easy on the exercise. Go at the dogs pace.

like people the best way to get a dog to lose weight is diet and exercise. consider how much your feeding him and how much exercise he gets. check feeding instructions on the dog food bag and make sure hes getting the correct amount. then gradually increase the number and length of walks he gets each day, but make sure you dont over do it.

Do the exercise. If you walk to get exercise take him along. Try to do somewhere to a 1/4 of a mile a day. Force him to use those slack muscles. You might even jog a little with him.

Start by playing in your yard,,,Throw the ball or toy...Let him go at his own pace till he,s ready for some lengthy walks...With this combo and some good food he,ll slim down!!!!

you can just walk him alot and cut way back on his diet like if you give him a cup of kibble twice a day only give him 1/2 twice a day instead.
