I would say it depends on ho it looks. If it is designed beautifully and made from quality fabric and it is complimented by your venue and decor I don't see anything wrong with it

I am all for doing something different and non-traditional for weddings, and I have seen some stunning black gowns. It is becoming a more popular thing to do, and I say go for it, we don't all have to be clones!! I've just read some of the comments posted here and some people have no imagination at all, white has nothing to do with virginity (unless you are a christian or deeply religious) and there is no law saying you MUST wear white, I think black is a great colour for a dress and people need to stop being so negative and let go of some of the old stuffy traditions.

You know everyone will talk about the dress, not YOU in the DRESS, but the dress. No one will notice or remark or remember anything else, but THE DRESS.
Is that really what you want?
To forever be remembered as the wedding they went to with the black dress?
Or would you rather have them remember how beautiful you looked and how lovely the flowers and food were.
If you like black and white, they make several gowns with black applique or lace or embroidery, or you could go a soft color.
One day your grandchildren will look at your wedding pictures, do you want them to laugh at you and how people did things in the olden days, or do you want them to ask if you still have your gown and if they could borrow it?

I think you would regret wearing a black dress to your wedding later but I thought that the dress in the first link that edan0705 posted was a gorgeous compromise. Only you can decide what you want for your wedding.
Good luck with what ever dress you choose and have a magical day.

Personally, while I love wearing black to work, I would not wear it to my wedding. It is, however, a valid choice if that is what you envision for your wedding. Just think about 15-20 years from now, when you look at those pictures again...would you say "yes! that is one gorgeous dress!" or will you say, "what was I thinking?!?"

i worked at a hotel where we had a wedding in our lobby near a roaring fireplace.
the couple had been married before.
she wore a floor lenght black sequined dress. he work a black tux.
it was an evening wedding and there were a zillion candles.
it was nicely done.
i just don't care for a black wedding dress.
but i think you should do WHATEVER you want for YOUR wedding... just remember to focus on the MARRIAGE after all is said and done!! that's the important stuff!!!

I agree that the choice is yours. If you have always wanted to wear black to your wedding, then do it. But don't let other people decide for you. This is you and your future husband's day. I say that if you are doubtful, is it because other people are telling you no, or because you don't think its a good idea?

if its what you really want then go for it... it is your day, your dress... your memories after all!
though if you do get second thoughts because of nay sayers... I have seen wonderful gowns that were white with black accents in them in varying amounts of black...
'white gowns' are only fashionable because Queen Victoria wore one...so they really haven't been around that long.
Asian (china, India) brides wear red... so it's really up to you!
Just make it your and the groom's day... not anyone elses...

Today, the only wedding rules are the ones you create for yourself. Many brides are opting for colorful dresses. Sure, Great Aunt Maybel will gafaw and gossip about you at bridge club but if you love it go ahead and wear it! :)

My favorite color is black, but for a wedding dress that just doesn't seem like a good omen.
