Because our minds are structured to have a leader and a place, we don't function well without it. If you think about it, it makes evolutionary sense, better chance of survival being in a group (pack or flock, what not) than being a loner. I think Religion and God fills that role.

It is the nature of the human race to constantly be looking for answers and assign meaning to every aspect of our lives. Some people need the comfort of religion to help them answer their questions and concerns. For some people, not having a higher power to relinquish control to, they feel that they have nothing to work towards (ie Christians work towards Heaven) and so feel that they are 'lost'.

My pet theory - pun intended - is that some people evolved more from the dog side and some from the cat side.
Dogs are pack animals, and easy to train because they live to please masters. Believers have dog traits.
Cats, OTOH, demand what they want and are difficult to train because they do things on their own timetable. Atheists are cat people, independent.
Now I like both animals, and I've owned dogs - but I am owned by a cat, who would never even think that he was owned by anyone.

Some people are the sheep, some are the shepherds and some are the wolves.
Ever notice that Jesus is called the Shepherd of men and church members are called a flock?
Hmm...

Yeah, some people feel that way. Yet they can not believe. I wish they had their own strength to be Atheist and not to worry. Death is very sad - Atheist or not. If you look forward to your death than something is wrong.

They're blind and they need a seeing eye dog. Religion serves the purpose of being a seeing eye dog for them. They use it to get thru life, walking here and there amongst those of us who can see and who do not need a seeing eye dog, obviously.

Its depressing to think that this is it. That there is nothing else out there.
Religion provides hope, as well as moral guidliness for a good way to live your life.
