Well, tin and aluminum are different metals. I don't think I've seen "tin" foil in stores during my life, but it was the precursor aluminum foil. Because it used to be "tin" the name has stuck and people use them interchangeably.

We don't get tinfoil these days. It was used before aluminum became widely used for foil. Tinfoil is made from tin, and aluminum foil from aluminum.
Generally, you will hear the term "tinfoil" from those who were around when it was in wide use, but they are actually referring to the aluminum foil available today.

they are the same thing. in older cook books aluminum foil is refered to as tin foil. but it is all the same thing now.
